Returning to his distinctive style of collage, Blake sees four of his newest editions featuring the now-repurposed BBC building 'Soho House' surrounded by much loved actors, television personalities and children's characters. Tattooed Ladies

A charming illustrative inkjet print featuring two tattooed ladies, in a limited edition of 50 prints. Watercolour portraiture has long been central to Blake's work, and he has released several 'tattooed people' artworks in his time. Ghosts

Exploring the art of lithograph stone printing, Blake has created two limited edition prints paying homage to artists Barnett Freedman and Graham Sutherland. An avid collector of found art, Blake's interest in arcane and unusual objects such as cigarette packets and match boxes has long been seen in his artwork. Returning to his fascination with historic items and the beauty of found objects, the ghost artworks have been created using vintage lithograph stones to create the layers of the background, imprinting the stones' history and revealing artwork from years passed. The result is classical and curious. Printed on vintage paper, these lithograph prints have a naturally charming sepia toned discolour and decalled edge. Printed at The Curwen Studio.

Still working as an artist at 85, Frank Bowling OBE RA (b. Guyana, 1934) is known for his ambitious abstract paintings, rich in colour, thick with texture, and fuelled with raw, impassioned energy.  Bowling's work has been showcased all over the world including the Royal Academy of Arts in London (2011), Spritmuseum in Stockholm (2014-15)  and Dallas Museum of Art in Texas (2015). With his first major retrospective on at the Tate Modern this summer, CCA Galleries is delighted to showcase Frank Bowling's limited edition print, ‘Andrew brought greetings from Allen Jones’, his first silkscreen print in over 30 years.

Acknowledged globally for his large scale bold and dynamic paintings, Huxley’s abstract work explores implied perspectives, combining stretched and distorted ellipses and shapes with flat blocks of colour and linear patterns to create dynamic illusions. He invites the viewer to unpick the paintings and consider why such elements have been considerately placed together.

Born in London in 1938, Huxley attended Harrow School of Art from 1951 – 1956 before enrolling into Royal Academy Schools at the age of 17. After extensive teaching experience he was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art in 1986 where many now established artists such as Dino Chapman, Nigel Cook, Dexter Dalwood, Andrew Grassie, Tracey Emin, Chantal Joffe and Chris Ofili were his students. Upon finishing teaching in 1998 Huxley was elected Honorary Fellow and Professor Emeritus. He lives in West London, sharing the same complex of studios with Peter Blake and Ben Johnson.

Having grown up with the influence of American culture, a significant turning point for the artist was in 1964 when he won a Peter Stuyvesant Travel Award which saw him travelling to America. Spurred on by the excitement of experiencing the reality of life in the New World, he was introduced to many of the leading American artists of the period including Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner and Jasper Johns, visiting their studios and forming lifelong friendships with some. In 1965 he was awarded the Harkness Fellowship which took him to New York, funding a two years residency and resulting in his first solo show there. He rented a 100ft x 25ft loft which enabled him to realise his ambitions of scaling up his paintings and developing his shapes and compositions. By deconstructing the traditional monocentric format of American abstract paintings of the time, he created his initial studies for his so-called ‘key series’ works, which were seminal to the development of the divided canvases that have characterised his work ever since.

Huxley has spent the last 5 decades exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions all over the world. Some of his most iconic commissions include sets and costumes for the Rambert Dance Company (1991), wall drawings for the entrances to Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (2001) and Charing Cross Hospital, London (2011) and a room in the Azerbaijan International Pavilion for the Venice Biiennale (2015). His most recent solo exhibitions have been in the David Richard Gallery, Santa Fé, New Mexico and the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia.

Frank Bowling OBE RA (b. Guyana, 1934) moved to London in 1953, where his artistic career began shortly after his arrival at the Royal College of Art (1959-62). The artist has since established studios in both New York and London.  

Bowling began his career as a figurative painter, and was involved in the British Pop Movement of the '50s and '60s. His  first solo exhibition, Image in Revolt, was hosted the year Bowling graduated at Grabowski Galleries in London. However, in 1966, Bowling decided to move to New York, aided by his first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded in 1967. Following this move to New York, Bowling’s painting began to turn to abstraction – the field in which his contributions were to be most significant. His pictures, which had always inclined towards a frontal geometric structure of space, became more geometrically complex, guided by principals of mathematics and symmetry. It is during this transitional period in the mid- to late-'60s that Bowling’s seminal body of work, the Map Paintings – a series of quasi-abstract colour fields overlaid with stencilled images of maps of Australia, South America and Africa – was produced.

In 1971, Bowling met Clement Greenberg, who not only became a regular visitor to the artist's studio, but also an important influence to Bowling. Greenberg’s advice and encouragement helped remove any lingering doubts Bowling might have had about his commitment to modernism. The social and political imagery and narrative present in Bowling’s earlier work was replaced by an increasing focus on material, process, and colour. By this time, Bowling had developed a very personal palette for his large, light-filled, lyrical colour abstractions that distinguished his work from that of earlier Colour Field painters working in the USA such as Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski or Larry Poons. However, never content to stop exploring and experimenting with the possibilities of paint, Bowling continued to innovate with new processes. He subsequently developed a special mechanical apparatus which titled the canvas so he could pour paint onto it, creating the spontaneous fusions of layer and colour now known as the iconic Poured Paintings.

In the early 1980s, the influence of geometry became visible not just in Bowling's paintings, but also in the way he worked with canvas. He started using chunks of Styrofoam to create quasi-sculptural relief, a technique the artist continues to use today. Indeed, Bowling’s recent works produced over the last few years continue to explore the nature and possibilities of abstract painting, the diverse range of principles and processes explored across his career now converging and coalescing in dynamic new configurations of colour and form. This new period of painterly experimentation has received critical acclaim, and has recently been showcased in exhibitions in the UK and US. Bowling continues to orchestrate the emotive potential of colours to communicate a visual experience of uniquely sensuous immediacy.

DANNY ROLPH

Danny Rolph is back with another stunning silkscreen to complete his tropical trio of prints launched last year. Taking inspiration from his travels and memories of Mauritius, 'Encompass' joins 'Encounter' and 'Endeavour' and is available in an edition size of 30 prints. Launched at this years London Original Print Fair, all three of his editions are now available to purchase on our website. On Sunday 6th May we were lucky to be joined by the artist who gave an in depth talk about his work.

Rolph is careful and deliberate with his choice of colours. The blended pink and yellow background represents the exotic Mauritian sunrises, with the black gesturing to a topographical map of the island. The five elements in vibrant yellow, pink, pale turquoise, silver and white, echo the shapes he drew on the island; with pink, yellow and white mirroring the ground and a sudden slice of silver bringing the eye back into the composition. A gentle wisp of pale turquoise billows across the top like a silk scarf or a tropical bird lightly 'kissing' the dominant shape.

'Encompass' completes the trio perfectly, complimenting his previously considered compositions and choice of layered textures and glazes in 'Encounter' and 'Endeavour'. Rolph considers this print a summary of his time and experiences spent on the island.

Acknowledged globally for his multi-layered, colourful paintings, Danny's seemingly chaotic work reflects the dynamism of his surroundings. He is inspired by the cities of London, New York and Rome as well as the deserts of West Texas and the Indian Ocean, whose sunsets appear as a recurring motif in the background of his work. His colour choices are instinctive and deliberate and echo the environment around him. The artist continually questions surface tension and spatial relations via the mediums of Triplewall plastic and canvas surfaces, embracing doubt and discovery within the creative process.

Following on from ‘Encounter’, Rolph's second silkscreen print explores the printing process further, finding particular enjoyment in the use of finishes and glazes. Originally intended to be grey, the silver additions to the left and right of the print add depth and a new dimension to the colourful base, while the vivid pink at the bottom is broken up by a single line of glaze enhancing the multi-layered effect Rolph is best known for.

Usually finding inspiration in philosophy, poetry and history, Rolph wanted to produce a print that related to his current interests in the studio. Having only produced one silkscreen edition before, Rolph saw creating this edition as an opportunity to allow him time to investigate the process further, which he found informative and exhilarating in equal measure.

As the world celebrates International Women's Day we are taking a look at some of our most influential and inspiring female artists, SANDRA BLOW, LUCY FARLEY and BARBARA RAE.

SANDRA BLOW

One of the leading lights of the abstract art movement of the 1950s. Her works are often on a large scale, consisting of abstract collages of cheap discarded materials such as sawdust, cut-out strips of old canvas, plaster and torn paper.

Although painters like Jennifer Durrant, Gillian Ayres and Joan Mitchell shared with Blow ambitious scale and expressive dynamism, she stands alone as the earliest and most original woman painter in Britain able to challenge the bar-room "macho" cult associated with free, informal abstract painting.

LUCY FARLEY

Born in 1982, Lucy lives and works in London. She studied at Central St. Martins graduating in 2005 before completing her MA in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 2009. Having completed a two-year Fellowship at the Royal Academy, she has exhibited several times at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition as well as at the Mall Galleries.

"It is important I work in situ on Printmaking plates, paper and drafting film, directly from the landscape, figure or interior. There is a speed and spontaneity I wish to capture in my original drawings which I can manipulate, but always keep in the finished works."

BARBARA RAE

Barbara Rae CBE RA studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1961 to 1965. She was awarded a travel scholarship in 1966 which enabled her to work in France and Spain and unleased a love of travel that still remains a huge influence in her work. She went on to have a teaching career in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, and now lives and works in Edinburgh.

Taking her inspiration from maps, geography, typography and local history, Rae’s dynamic and colourful paintings combine the influence of landscape and travel with painterly abstraction. Although she does not like the term landscape painter, the importance of place is very apparent in her works; in particular the human traces and patterns of history that are left on a landscape.
