my answer would be that i agree, i don't think he's particularly interested in an heir. in my personal headcanon, beron spent a lot of his life berating eris for never settling down with a woman (female, ugh whatever) and popping out babies, and because of that, eris now has lingering resentment toward the idea.

that said! i don't think he's against the idea of having children entirely. overall, i don't think he's anti-kid/baby (e.g. he's very fond of his nieces and nephews).

as for his own kid/s, he wouldn't be having them for a long time (and perhaps not ever). but if he were to be a dad, i think he'd definitely be willing to venture into that with nes (and, by extension, cass and az, bc let's face it, no matter whose baby it is genetically, that kid belongs to all four of them).

i like that you brought up vulnerability bc yeah that's a crucial part of it. the biggest male influence in eris' life was an abusive piece of shit, which is clearly going to weigh on his mind when he's deciding whether he wants to be a parent. like can he be better than his father? even if he thinks he could be, will that change when the baby actually comes along? i definitely think he'd be haunted by thoughts of whether he could raise a child well, and that would stall his decision for a long time. but then, the other 3/4 of the foursome would wrestle with similar thoughts, since they all had pretty appalling upbringings.

i also agree very much re. generally not enjoying a HEA that includes pregnancy/having kids (Hunger Games indeed being one of the most egregious examples of this). sometimes it's done in a way that feels very fulfilling and beautiful and it's a gorgeous conclusion to the story/characters/relationship etc, but most of the time it veers into feeling very American Dream Picket Fence Tradwife shitty (Twilight comes to mind here - stephanie meyer truly did bend over BACKWARDS to ensure sparkle boy and clumsy girl had the full mormon experience).

anyway all this to say, when it comes to kids with those four, i think they're going to be taking a very long time to start seriously discussing the possibility, and even once those discussions do open up, they certainly won't be rushing into anything. it'll probably be one of the most mindful and carefully thought out decisions they ever make together (which i think is ideal when bringing an entire new person into the world).

as you said, their first kid (and in fact, their first few kids, because i do think they'll end up having several) would be Illyrian. and it would be through co-parenting those kids that eris would finally come to feel settled and confident in the decision to have a child that's his by blood.
