I really enjoyed the plenary on November 11th given by Karla Jackson Brewer.  She presented a different approach to feminism that I have never thought of before.  She used stories in order to get across important ideas to her audience, and I found it easy to connect to some of the stories she presented to us.  I also like how she spoke to us about negative self-talk.  We all do this from time to time, so I feel as if that aspect was particularly relevant to the audience.

At this past Wednesday’s plenary, Pam Fessler from National Public Radio came in to speak to us about her experiences covering poverty in the United States.  Before she spoke to us, I did not know much about poverty and that it is such a problem even in the United States.  I found out that although an individual may have items such as cell phones, laptops, or a television, that person could still be living in poverty.  I also learned that while poor choices are sometimes the cause of living below the poverty line, this is not always the case.  Simple bad luck could cause a person or a family to drop below the poverty line.  Throughout her speech, Pam Fessler let us listen to segments of some of her podcasts. One podcast that really stood out to me was the one about “water man” Dave, a retired man who spends his time handing out water to homeless people.  Not only does he give people necessary water to live, but he also gets to know them and gives them encouragement.  It’s people like Dave that are really making a difference in the lives of people living in poverty, and more people need to be like him and take action in order to help people out of poverty.

At this past Wednesday’s plenary, Wendy Cai-Lee gave a presentation on her success as a National Leader in Finance and Philanthropy.  As a Douglass Alumna, Wendy knows what we are all experiencing as far as academics and opportunities.  She strongly encouraged us to take part in opportunities that present themselves and not worry about why they occur.  She told us to “get to the table first; don’t worry about why you were invited.  You will never find out why if you are not at the table.”  In order to make a difference in your community, you have to be “at the table.”  I also thought it was interesting that Wendy was an introvert.  She certainly didn’t seem like one while she was giving her presentation.  Since I am an introvert as well, I will definitely take Wendy’s advice when it comes to networking.  She told us “being shy shouldn’t get in the way of your networking,” and I will do my best to put this advice into action.  Overall I really enjoyed Wendy’s presentation at our second plenary, and I plan on using her advice to my advantage in the future.
