The Puranic version adds cosmic depth: during the churning of the ocean, Svarbhanu disguised himself as a god to drink the nectar of immortality, but the Sun and Moon exposed him, leading to his beheading by Vishnu—yet because the nectar had already reached his throat, his severed head (Rahu) and body (Ketu) became immortal, forever chasing the Sun and Moon in revenge. This pursuit poetically describes the mechanics of eclipses: solar eclipses occur on new moon days, lunar eclipses fifteen days later on full moons, with the gap representing the shadow planet's concealment, while the Moon's ±5-degree tilt over the year determines when eclipses happen—all of which ancient observers encoded into the enduring image of a celestial serpent or dragon that swallows the Sun and Moon, making mythology a vessel for precise astronomical knowledge passed down through generations.
Having explored the mythology, it is equally important to understand the astrological significance of Rahu and Ketu. These shadow planets move in perpetual retrograde motion, and when they conjoin in any divisional chart, they reform the complete Asura Svarbhanu—a reminder of their severed state. In the natural zodiac, Rahu finds its domicile in Aquarius (the 11th sign), while Ketu rules Pisces (the 12th), but their influence extends far beyond these houses. Rahu transits through all signs from the 11th to the 6th, ceasing only in the presence of the Sun, symbolically reflecting its ancient defeat. Remarkably, every planet has at least one of its ruling signs "consumed" by Rahu or Ketu—Jupiter and Saturn lose both their signs to these shadowy forces—and on occasion, they even eclipse the Sun and Moon themselves, meaning no celestial body remains untouched by their energy. This consumption distorts planetary significations, yet paradoxically, eclipses are crucial for studying the Sun's corona and predicting space weather, suggesting that Rahu's darkness can also remove the blinding light that obscures deeper knowledge. Rahu is often times the most misunderstood planet, its true that in previous yuga, Rahu and its energy were considered as antithetical to pure way of living, however in modern times, (In kal yuga) where even the purest forms of things are engulfed in invisible cloths of darkness and the inherent quality of the pure thing causes the one to become hesitant in questioning any action as doing would be viewed as being the quality of a evil person (like how dare you question the authority of pure & pious, don't you see what they have done for you, you are not merely ungrateful but also lack any semblance of grace or manner), this manifests into people blindly following the pope (metaphorical), not questioning his character, not judging his action or seeing through his cunning words; Their deeds are cloaked through perceived holiness, not realizing that he is merely a fellow human, how can be claim to be connected to God or be his representative and if one claims to be so then he must preach the precise method of elevation cause if one of us can do it surely the entire human race can aswell. Rahu here creates necessary questions that no one dare asks, for they are blinded by the light whereas Rahu sees a thing for what it is not what it claims to be, it covers the sun so that one may examine it, revealing what was always hidden away in the blinding light. The way Rahu does it quite interesting, since its only a shadow planet its presence is only felt 2-4 times a year, this short interval causes it to perform duty in a hurry & therefore control the consciousness briefly yet deeply, leaving a lasting imprint, it is often being associated with Alcohol or mind altering substances (both these product requires it to be fermented/grow in the dark, isolated places), where the whole goal of these products is that the ingestor (here, folks tales also mention how Rahu eats the planet) can view those aspects of the anima that is even hidden from the Self, therefore gaining experience which cannot be gained as the ego wouldn't allow under normal circumstances.
Many people consider Rahu as being associated with smoky luxury; something one finds at a Luxury bar lounge or Grand places; however those are not the natural expressions of Rahu but of its depositor, think of it this way Rahu only has the mouth no body, its depositor and planet sitting with it makeup the body and since ketu sits in natural 7th from Rahu, it always acting its Marak; In anatomy the body and hormones release caused by it, dictates the kind of desires one has, combined that with Rahu's energy of consuming, merely amplifies the said desire (Rahu being visible in the plane for only 2-4 times a year, it was forced to develop eating habit that consumes large amount in short duration and only drawback Rahu it developed is its desire to live a prolonged live), here one must reconcile the Rahu energy by addressing it in waking life periodically.
