Cat Loud’s Wayward Girls: Billie Holiday

Where do you start with a woman like Billie? Born in Baltimore in 1915, she survived a tough, violent childhood and became an incomparable voice singers emulate, in some way, or at least try to.

She is the original wayward girl, and the first member of my Wayward Girls Hall of Fame. A discussion of waywardness must include criminal activity, as even in her lifetime, her notoriety fuelled sensationalist magazine columns as her drug addictions, tempestuous and controversial love life with a series of wrong ‘uns, her potty mouth and professional unreliability became common knowledge.

She was fired from numerous bands for being “temperamental and unreliable”, though she was frequently protesting low wages and poor working conditions.

She raised hell when confronted with racist heckling from audience members, and had to be escorted off stage. (She also glassed someone who harassed her in a bar. Maybe there was a bit of Glasgow in her somewhere.)

When she performed at New York’s Lincoln Hotel with Artie Shaw’s all-white band, despite being the headline act she was told to use the freight elevator so as not to upset white guests. She later quit the band.

After a stint in a Virginia prison for narcotics charges, she sold 2,700 advance tickets for her comeback at the Carnegie Hall, a record sell-out for the venue at the time.

After the same run-in with the law, she lost her cabaret performers license. She continued to perform anyway.

She suffered stage fright. She performed anyway.

She loved men and women, regardless of what the law had to say about that, too.

With Billie, it’s not all about the music. She’s in my Hall of Fame because she’s the best, and The Boss.

The Big Tour Diary

a beginning Friday 12th Back to my hometown of Tobermory on the glorious Isle of Mull, the first journey of the tour. Finn is lugging his keyboard and accordion around the country by public transport and wishing he played the triangle. Off the ferry, I realised there wasn't a bus. The first fail as a tour manager. Clearly still operating with a city brain. We got a generous lift to Tob with wildlife experts who had a roomy van and a vast knowledge of bird life. (There are no magpies on the island!) Arrived in Tob and headed straight home, to be greeted by an enthusiastic springer spaniel doing victory laps around the garden. A tea or two later, and it was off to An Tobar for rehearsal. Gordon Maclean has been the music man there for as long as it's doors have been open, and its been my spiritual home for equally as many years. Coming back with my own show is a hugely terrifying and also hilarious situation to be in. Gordon is simply a legend. Rehearsal: lots of cutting and chopping and changing. Finn and I have hardly had a chance to get together this year, so the real work has waited until now. Always daunting when it's this close to the wire, but the show is the best it's ever been. Goosebumps. A late night. Home at 10, and to bed. Saturday 13th SHOW DAY An early start, and a walk to the golf course, my teenage refuge. Lunch with my folks, a bit of admin and back to An Tobar for rehearsals. Dad says as I walk out the door "if you don't know it by now, you'll never know it!" Good advice, actually. But still room for self doubt. Everything was set and ready to go, and I kept messing up, leading to what can only be described as A Moment. I can blame it on the pressure of performing to a home crowd, the stress of organising a tour and the responsibility that comes with being The Boss. But honestly, I was doubting the show itself, worrying it was utter crap and totally afraid of letting the side down because I hadn't done my homework. I have a very vocal inner critic who I affectionately call The Worm, and The Worm was out in full force. I think I had a little episode of stage fright. I needed to go outside and sit down in the fresh air. We got through a full run through (Finn was flawless, by the way - he always is), and we had some chill time before curtain. There is no such thing as a Curtain Call at An Tobar. It's strictly on MMT - Mull Mean Time. The audience will be in when they're in, and performers are either On Stage or Almost On Stage. I had loads of time to enjoy the fridge of wine and chocolate provided (I swear i don't have a rider. Well, not this time anyway). From my comfy settee in the green room, Finn's solo set sounded stonking and the crowd sounded properly into it. The Mull crowd always are. And then, show time. There wasn't anything to worry about. Of all the seats available, my dad did choose one right in my firing line, but apart from that, smooth sailing with a generous crowd. I really feel that with a show like mine, it's success is dependent on how much an audience want to give me, how much they want to be part of it. And I was spoilt with a room full of open hearts. I don't know what to say, except I love you and thank you. A late night. More wine, catching up, familiar faces, reminiscing and my mum being the paparazzi. ('I want a close up, look at the camera.') Sunday 14th Valentine's It never gets any easier to leave the island. I felt like I was seeing it all for the first time, and it really is a majestic place. Sitting on a train back to the city, listening to Arcade Fire's 'Wake Up' as it winds it's way around mountains and lochs, feeling incredibly lucky, feeling the way I did when I left home the first time around. Tingles and nostalgia with a slight hint of WTF. Onwards.
