9. What’s your fandom’s most overused trope?

Uh, maybe Rhys as Jack’s PA? Which, like, I’m not the target audience for that fic in the first place ‘cause it’s not a ship I read so whatever. But having done basically that job for the better part of a year it’s really funny to me, I worked for a nice reasonable woman who wasn’t a literal cartoon villain and it was still gruelling and demoralizing, I can only imagine what absolute hell it would be to do for Jack LOL. It’s not a glamorous job and it is not power by proxy, you are not second in command you’re just in the vicinity of people with power all the time. I don’t think it suits a dude whose one immutable character trait is wanting to climb the corporate ladder. 

PA/Boss is definitely just like, A Trope in fanfiction at large though. I thought about that a lot when I was doing that job lmao. 

12. What writing rule do you refuse to break?

I can’t tell if this means “writing rule” like the kind of rules you see passed around as advice in Tumblr posts or writing rule as in, like, my own personal set.

For the ones that get shared around Tumblr... I dunno, maybe my extreme aversion to using epithets for known/named characters. Like “the blonde” etc. Absolutely not. Only if the POV character doesn’t know who that person is.

@corporatestooge and I had this whole long involved discussion about basically (uh cw character death, super angst):

some nonspecific shenanigans go down on helios

jack-piloted rhys ends up in an altercation with sasha

sasha gets the upper hand relatively quick bc rhys is a noodle no matter who is at the wheel

before she can hurt him though rhys is like wait wait wait sasha stop! so she does

jk it was jack messing with her, he disarms her, they’re fighting again

jack’s taunting her the whole time about how rhys is dead, or is he?, he is, or maybe he’s freaking out right now!, or maybe i’m just throwing you off your game haha

sasha finally gets the upper hand again, gets one of those split second telltale decisions like [shoot him in the arm] [shoot him in the chest]

decides rhys is gone, jack’s using him like a meat suit, that’s fucked up and i need to end it, goes for [shoot him in the chest]

while jack is dying he’s still doing the “wah sasha it’s me” thing, which she ignores... until he starts talking about how it’s not her fault, she did what she had to, it’s okay, and she realizes it actually is rhys this time

so rhys dies in her arms while sasha sits there thinking about how she could’ve just shot him in the arm

i guess eventually fiona finds them, like the gif of troy returning with pizza, manages to drag sasha to an escape pod or whatever so they can get back to pandora

fiona represses the hell out of everything so she can focus on taking care of sasha who is obviously... like... shattered

presumably vaughn never speaks to either of the girls again

athena and sasha share some nice ‘accidentally killed someone we loved’ bonding

Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?

I read it sometimes, I have never written it in a permanent lasting way. I’m interested in it mostly for short stories like one or two shots, to explore the event and maybe the immediate aftermath. I’m less likely to read a really long fic that is going to culminate in death. I would maybe read a long fic where the death happens early on and the rest of the fic is the aftermath, but then it would really depend who the fic was focusing on and who died.
