Being bored has never lead you to anything good, so the moment you felt in need of finding something interesting to kill some time, you gave up to the temptation and moved off your bed. Staying under the deck of the ship was no fun at all and you could barely feel the excitement over your journey anymore from under deck. It wasn’t a good sign, so it was wise to change it.
You welcomed the warm light on your skin with a deep, content sigh. The saltiness in the air was entirely different from that which was under the deck and much more fresh. You felt a little tired, but you were sure it was normal on such a long voyage, far from home or any lands you could visit. You had been warned that it would become monotonous after a few weeks, but you’d never imagined how true those words would prove to be.
“I thought you’d be sleeping by now,” you heard a familiar voice on your right. You smiled to Caspian, moving your face to away from the sun.
“I was so bored I thought a good sleep would help get back my energy, but it failed miserably. The odor of the salted fish isn’t really helping either,” you shrugged.
Caspian got flustered and searched for the right words for a second. You really enjoyed that look on his face, as he desperately looked for a good solution. You were sure he would be a great ruler once you get back to Narnia.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t know it was a problem – I told my men to put them somewhere where they wouldn’t bother anyone and-…”
“Relax, I’m joking,” you laughed, stopping him. “I just can’t really find anything to keep my mind busy, you know how much I need it.”
Before Caspian could reply, you saw Edmund stopping beside you.
“What do you say to a quick sparing then?” he asked, gesturing to the main deck, where it wasn’t difficult to create some space. “I’m free right now.”
“Of course! Just let me grab my sword!”
Caspian didn’t look very pleased and he frowned as he walked after the two of you.
“I can spar with you too if you want…”
“Thank you, Caspian,” you turned to him, patting him on the shoulder. “But we both know that as a king you are always busy with taking care of everything here.”
He looked after you, watching as some of the sailors helped to clear the deck. All the crew seemed to like you and enjoy your presence, so they would gladly help you with anything, anytime. It wasn’t anything unusual and Caspian could understand them very well as he felt the same. You’ve always been his dear friend and he should probably be happy seeing you work so well with others, but even though he tried hard, it wasn’t that easy.
“What are you looking at?” Lucy asked, approaching Caspian at the barriers of the higher deck. “Oh, they are fighting again!”
“Yes, your brother seems to enjoy it very much,” Caspian said, nodding.
“Of course he does! Just look how pretty they both look, just like they were dancing. I wish I could wield a sword like that one day.”
“I’m sure your brother would gladly help you.”
Lucy sensed something was off with him. She took a closer look, trying to understand the man and she didn’t even wince when he noticed her staring.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have something on my face?” Caspian laughed and she replied with a devious smile.
“You don’t like how much time Edmund spends with them, do you?”
Caspian gasped, straightening his back instantly as if his puzzled expression couldn’t answer the girl’s question entirely. He shook his head, but the words didn’t seem to like getting out of his mouth that day.
“I’d never… I have no idea what you are talking about…” he stuttered while looking away from her and shrugging the whole time, probably forgetting he was doing so.
Lucy looked very proud of herself as she swayed on her feet, piercing Caspian with her unexpectedly perceptive gaze he finally gave up to. He spread his hands.
“ Don’t tell anyone, okay?” he asked. “Please.”
“Sure, as long as you do something with that,” Lucy nodded.
He frowned, not sure if he heard her right.
“What do you mean?”
“You should finally make a move or nothing is gonna happen!” Lucy explained, quickly shushed by Caspian. He looked around, but no one seemed to notice their talk.
“But I don’t want anything to happen!”
“But you are jealous over Edmund.”
“Sure, but-… Wait, I’m not jealous! Why would I be?” Caspian asked, forcing a smile.
Lucy saw right through it. She gestured to the fighting duo down below them.
“It’s only a friendly fight, there is nothing to…”
“You lie very often for royalty. Everyone can see how you feel.”
Caspian sighed deeply, leaning on the barriers.
“I don’t know what else I could do, to be honest. I offered to spare with them too, right after Edmund, and I was dismissed…”
“So maybe do something because you want to, not because you want to compete with him. And try not to get dismissed so easily,” Lucy laughed.
Caspian nodded, feeling a little better. Edmund and you just finished your fight and moved to the quarters to drink something. The few sailors that were watching them congratulated them on the fight.
He looked at Lucy, still standing right next to him.
“You’re very smart for a girl so young, you know that?”
“Of course I am! I have ruled Narnia for many years, remember that!” she grinned, lifting her chin.
“Then I shall obey my queen and learn from her wisdom,” Caspian bowed lowly. After some hesitation, he slowly moved to the stairs, probably in order to wait for you when you go back on the deck.
Lucy smiled, cupping her face and watching him from above. He may have been an adult, but sometimes she felt like she indeed could see much more than him. It felt really nice.
