I’ve watched “The Big Gay Musical”. The first thing I’ve checked before watching – the director is openly gay *relieved sigh*. Yes – it’s basically a musical about an off-Broadway gay musical production with the fully gay cast. That’s all – their problems on and off the scene. One of the main characters was raised by a Baptist family and who didn’t come out to them yet. Now they want to come to his opening night and he doesn’t know what to do. Another character has problems with his boyfriend (Spoilers!) – someone told him that the character is HIV positive (even though he’s not) and now they broke up and the whole movie this character tries to find serious relationships – not a single-night hook-up – which’s a very big problem in the gay community. Actually, it’s another musical with super playful and funny musical numbers and a lot of jokes which talks about very serious problems – homophobia, coming out to homophobic family, religion and lgbtqi+ rights, HIV status, slut-shaming (yes, in a musical about gays there’s a lot of it – sometime as a joke, sometimes not), hook-up culture and so on. I also wanted to add that if you are allergic to naked men’s torsos, you definitely shouldn’t watch that film because it’s just full of it and not only in scenes of sex. As for me – it was a great plus, but, I guess, for somebody, it could be a minus. By the way – a lot of gay sex/cuddling scenes. What’s more, one of the songs from the musical they are staging is so unbearably catchy that you should have either iron will and capability to sing songs with awkward gay lyrics safely out loud. Instead of the conclusion, one the best (in my opinion) dialogues of the movie:
(it happened in the medical centre where one of the characters came to get an HIV test (which appeared to negative) and another came to support him)
- I met a cute boy last night. - Oh, me too! Mine sang me a song. - Mine's a Mormon. - I think we're both pretty damn pathetic. - I think I like being pathetic.
