Rotating Cas' religious beliefs in the context of this quote:
But just, the particular way the Ashleen have developed this very concrete connection between the spilling of blood and their own souls in connection to their planet. But just, these people with a very long history of (in)direct human sacrifice to transform the souls of the slain into a form consumable by the living to empower them to ultimately commit more violence until they die and their souls continue the cycle etc etc. And the inevitably existential sense of loss Cas feels by being permanently cut off from that by becoming Rogue Trader. Ghostfire is unique to Iocanthos' soil, when she dies she's returning to nothing. If she kills people out here, well, their souls also are going to nothing as far as she's concerned.
And I think there's something to explore in regards to her relationship with Marazhai in that context. Like, that cycle of bloodshed and soul renewal is a tangible reality for Drukhari. The more blood and death around him, the more "alive" Marazhai gets, the more spurs him on to keep killing. The form is different but she understands the concept. It feels natural to her, even. And I think too, the act of Feasting and whatever weird Aeldari emotion blending thing that goes along with it feels especially invigorating. That thing she's been missing, here's something to approximate it as well as she can get out here, at the low, low price of a bunch of a bunch of people who were probably going to die senselessly somehow else anyways. That's not to say Feasting is a religious experience™ for her or that she finds Marazhai in any way divine (Throne no), but it's a small hook that keeps her curious to revisit the experience again.

Remembering the parts of Legacy where Dreyder Phrax is having Warp nightmares and Varro (his dad) talks about how it's something that doesn't really go away. Even through the protection of the Gellar Field the Warp can still mess up an unprepared mind, but it's something Dreyder's just going to have to get used to as a Rogue Trader's scion. That said, at the same time, it's mentioned that Varro and Ksana keep purity seals affixed to the corners of their bed, and Dreyder has a pewter aquila he's supposed to pray over before he sleeps as extra protection.
Has got me thinking about how Cas is a miserable sleeper due to her previous brushes with Warp corruption and how she probably wouldn't realize how much worse it could get until her first Warp Jump. It's something that probably wouldn't shock her as badly as it would someone who hasn't experienced the things she has, but at the same time especially with all the other stress of leaving home, becoming Rogue Trader, etc. her first few weeks, if not months, on the job would be miserable, if only for having to recalibrate how she deals with the nightmares.
I think as well because so much of her spirituality is tied to the physical place of Iocanthos, she wouldn't fully reach for whatever practices she grew up doing, because to her mind they wouldn't be as effective. But she also wouldn't wholesale adopt prayer in the Drusian manner either. Probably something in the middle, or at least a symbolic replacement to what she'd have at home. She won't paint her face, but her bedding will be done in blue and white. She'll take an aquila or some other token, but she'll say her prayers privately and in Ashleen instead of going to a priest etc etc. It doesn't really help, because very few things do in a way that's foolproof and she's not genuinely religious that way, but it gives her something to feel grounded.
From this ask meme! Thank you! (and god...the challenge of keeping this uh, "short")
11: their family life
Saba (Imperial/Church name, "Casimira") was born into one of the more influential of Iocanthos' Ashleen clans. Her mother, Anika, was a distant cousin of the Skull the Conqueror, and the mountain village her family dwelt in thrived as much as any settlement on Iocanthos is allowed to. She's the middle of five, including two maternal half-siblings, Eisha and Varl, and two younger sisters, Veida and Garma. Because of how harsh the planet is, Ashleen clans are very close-knit and cooperative within themselves, raising children communally and sharing family prestige among all members. Saba grew up with not just her siblings, but also a bevy of aunts, uncles, and cousins from both sides to look after her when her parents were away. It was instilled in her from an early age that even if she didn't get along with all of her family members personally, she could rely on and be vulnerable with them in ways she could with no one else. That feeling of security is something she sorely misses once she leaves the planet (and her original name) behind to assume the role of Rogue Trader.
Casimira von Valancius is eventually a mother of three: twin daughters Cymbry and Bisera by Vladaym Tocara, and a son, Ezhan, with Marazhai. Having seen the damaging effects the weight of the Warrant can have on a dynasty, Cas was especially diligent about adapting her own Iocanthan social mores to her children's upbringing in the hopes of curbing the intra-family backstabbing Rogue Trader scions are prone to. Across the board, Casimira's expectations for her heirs are exacting, but not unequal, and paired with an openness that cultivates their own sense of autonomy over blindly following her example or imitating each other. By the standard of her peers, this makes Cas an unusually involved parent, something she prides herself in given that she also enjoys the benefits of being close with all three—even if they're not always getting along with each other in turn.
Second one under the cut for length:
12: their romantic life
A certified mess. Cas is someone who is easily infatuated but hard to keep. She likes people who are self-assured and ambitious, but also hates not being a priority. Passion and violence appeal to her—but raise your voice at her in anger at your own peril. She's always ready to receive vulnerability, but is skittish about giving in turn under most circumstances. Actions read far louder to her than words, but what actions she finds meaningful are often hard to understand. Add in her outsider status and deep resentment for Imperial norms and culture, you have a woman for whom building a romantic relationship is like playing Minesweeper.
Tragically, Heinrix is Cas' first experiment with genuine romance. He's intelligent, handsome, constantly spying on her, and she's emotionally drawn to him. They're lonely people, living in identities separate from the ones they grew up with, trying their best in a job that chose them. But those jobs are fundamentally at cross-purposes more often than not, and vast cultural differences often lead to misunderstandings that turn into rows, especially where Cas' decisionmaking is involved. Those cracks only get deeper as time goes on. Heinrix needs time to figure out what he wants, but comes off as inconsistent because he can't keep himself from blurring the lines between his Job and his Feelings. Cas needs assurance, but is so unyielding in her expectations that she can't meet Heinrix where he is. They do reach a genuine middle ground in Commorragh and Cas is able to open up to Heinrix in ways she wouldn't otherwise have. But that calm immediately blows up after Cas brings back her new war trophy Marazhai. The argument that follows is the first nail in the coffin. They both feel undermined and unheard and are too angry to really speak to each other until after the escape. The penultimate blow is struck with that dinner, despite the love confession. Cas doesn't doubt Heinrix's feelings. But she's made it clear where the source of her unhappiness lies, and at that point, if he still chooses the Inquisition over her, she accepts he doesn't find her worth committing to. What finally ends things is Heinrix demanding not to be a casual dalliance when confronting Cas about her closeness to Marazhai. A cooler head might have recognized this as being Heinrix's way of signalling a desire to stay with her. Unfortunately, that specific wording instead brought Cas the closest she's ever been to wanting to maul someone like a feral canid. It.... took a while for them to be on neutral ground again.
Marazhai is who eventually wins out as Cas' life partner, in spite and because of, how mercenary their relationship starts out as. They both read in each other the unfortunate fact that "Drukhari Trueborn" and "former barbarian envoy" speak a mutually intelligible enough language regarding power and relationships to engender curiosity. Furthermore, the lack of long-term expectations lets Cas relax into letting Marazhai take the lead on things. She's not initially attracted to him, and vice versa, but the ego boost of being with him in the way she is appeals to her especially since everything else going on is so out of control. Cas doesn't catch feelings in a legible way, more that, similarly to how Marazhai is testing to see how far she'll go to keep up with him, she finds herself curious about how much he's willing to "invest" in her. Giving him greater liberties with her time and about the Charybdis, actively seeking him out to Feast etc—things that imply greater affinity without necessarily playing her hand. Of course it's easier for her to read his intentions than the opposite, since being a simple mon-keigh makes her actions an expected part of falling under Marazhai's sway, while Cas is pretty sure Drukhari don't usually have their human fling partners brand them. Marazhai's confession is very much a mutual "not playing" realization. The Gremlin Barbarian part of Cas recognizes that Marazhai just handed her a legendary opportunity to humiliate him in a way that no Drukhari would think possible. But, as much as she relishes the sight of his distress at the thought of her leaving, she can't go through with it. Because Casimira is also chasing a very specific high that isn't going to happen with anybody else, and Throne they've played each other but at least Marazhai embarrassed himself with his feelings first. That's really all that matters.
Name: Casimira von Valancius Iocanthos af Calixis (born Saba)
Alias: Casimira isn't her birth name. It's her Imperial name, later her name as Rogue Trader.
Gender: Female
Age: late 20s/early 30s?
Spoken Language: Ashleen (somewhat mutually intelligible with High Gothic) is her first language, standard Low Gothic is her second. She's also decently competent in standard High Gothic as well.
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Occupation: Rogue Trader. Before then, an envoy in Skull's Band.
Favourite…
Color: Blue
Entertainment: The Vhaebos VI arenas are her favorite specific destination. But more generally, Iocanthos has a strong tradition of oral history and Cas develops an appreciation for the theatre as Rogue Trader.
Pastime: Gossip, especially over a game of cards and a glass of amasec.
Food: Cas has a sweet tooth, especially for Asuryani Janusian desserts.
Drink: She really likes Dammassine, Raenka as well.
Have they…
Passed University: Nope! Cas hasn't been in a formal school environment since she was a teenager. Most of her higher ed comes through Abelard or any tutors at his recommendation, to get her better fit into her role.
Had Sex: Much to the misfortune of her crew, has, and continues to.
Had Sex in Public: In Commorragh, but it was Heinrix's idea, and she's never done it again. Cas is too much of a lady to initiate such a thing. The Lower Decks don't count if everyone's dead.
Got Tattoos: Cas' arms and shoulder blades are heavily tattooed from her life on Iocanthos. She gets no new ones as Rogue Trader.
Got Piercings: Her ears, although Cas prefers not to wear body jewelry in her day to day.
Got Scarred: Yes! Her face is marked by what was a collection of much larger scars from her warband days. Particularly memorable feasts also sometimes lead to her keeping a scar or two from the event. Never anywhere that can be easily seen.
Had a Broken Heart: Yeah. Just because she's the one who called it quits with Heinrix doesn't mean it didn't hurt for a long time.
Are they…
A Cuddler: Cas likes to be cuddled, but doesn't initiate it herself, especially since her partner is made of spikes and bones and poison. She's not looking to have "death by attempted cuddle" on her cause of death.
Scared Easily: No. Her home planet is a harsh place, fear is more likely to get you killed than anything. In the present, her partner is a Drukhari. It takes a lot to genuinely scare her.
Jealous Easily: Not at all. Cas holds very strongly to the idea that if someone wants to be with her, they will. If they don't, she won't degrade herself by chasing. When it comes to Marazhai she's especially unbothered. So long as the "V" stays on his neck she knows where she stands. Who is going to supplant that?
Trustworthy: Surprisingly so. Cas rarely tells a genuine lie about anything and believes that her position as Rogue Trader means she doesn't need to. If she says she'll help someone, she will. If her aid helps, there's a bond of trust there and they'll be less likely to act against her. If that person betrays her goodwill, rarely is there a situation where she can't just kill them for the slight anyways.
Family…
Sibling(s): Two older half-siblings, two younger sisters.
Parents: Both of Cas' parents were alive and flourishing when she left Iocanthos.
Children: Casimira eventually has three: Cymbry, Bisera, and Ezhan. She adores them. They also kinda fuck her up. It's fine though.
Pets: Cas grew up around animals, but tends not to have them herself.*

Cas' Kids Lore Dump because I haven't done one of these in forever.
Under the cut for length.
Cymbry and Bisera in general
The girls are fraternal, although both still heavily favor Vladaym with their lean builds and dour features. They're dark haired and dark eyed, and were it not for Cas' complexion, both could easily pass for being void born. They even possess the same uncanny countenance that many find viscerally unpleasant upon first meeting them.
The fact that they are twins was partially planned—Cas preferred to have her heir and a spare in one go. They're born on Dargonus and are raised with the same general education befitting heirs of a Rogue Trader—better even due to Cas making her realm a haven for xenoheretical scholarship. The girls are free to pursue their own niche interests as they grow up, rounding out their identities beyond simply being "von Valancius heirs." In fact, Cas forbids her daughters' tutors to negatively compare the two's prospects at all. They are to compliment each other, not compete.
Their relationship with Cas' heritage is complicated. Ashleen is one of their first languages, and they speak it with their mother and each other all the time. They're raised with a lot of the same values, and are familiar with certain songs and folk tales—filtered through Cas' occasionally hazy memory—and at minimum do possess the same clan tattoos on their arms. However, they consider themselves to be Footfallen/of the Koronus Expanse first and foremost. It also helps that both have the same "sixth sense" about Warp phenomena unique to many born in the region. They're more in-tune with their corner of space than most.
Their relationship with their sort-of stepdad is... tense to say the least. The girls had known of Marazhai's general existence, but the exact depth of his relationship with Casimira didn't really click for them until he was suddenly reintegrating himself back into their mother's life as though he had been gone two minutes instead of two decades. For his part, Marazhai is "nice" in that he knows any harm to Cas' daughters will be accompanied by a swift divorce and one-way trip to Slaanesh's palace. Mostly, they are secondary figures to him, barely above notice—especially once Ezhan is born four years later and Cas gives him all the same rights and privileges of a legitimate von Valancius heir.
Since their mom had spent the last few years of their adolescence otherwise occupied, the twins decide to start on their expected time away from the dynasty on Footfall with the Kasballica. Partially because the Kasballica is the von Valancius dynasty's most loyal support, and partially because of their parental connection. It doesn't matter that they don't feel a familial bond with Vladaym Tocara or vice versa—it's about the snub to Casimira.
Cymbry von Valancius
The older twin, Cymbry is a natural spacer despite spending her early years planetbound. Growing up, she was a fixture at Dargonus' librarium and as an adult contributes several first-hand accounts to its archives. The lure of the Void and its hidden knowledge calls to her, and she especially loves visiting the Halo Stars for a look at cultures outside the Imperial norm. Within the Protectorate, she especially loves visiting Janus, less for the Asuryani themselves and more for how their influence is felt by the people there.
Of her siblings, she's more outgoing than Bisera but not as wild as Ezhan. Like her mother, Cymbry smiles easily and conducts herself with a confident bearing that makes her a natural fit for the social scene she most often finds herself in. Particularly adventurous nobles, pirates, and visiting Rogue Traders often appreciate Cymbry's company because she will absolutely compliment Lord/Lady So-and-So on the beauty of their, surely authentic, xenos artifacts. A ring made from the crystal skeleton of a Vaporian Sand Tiger? And they hunted it themselves? Oh she must know more...
Outgoing doesn't mean diplomatic however. Cymbry was often the "but why?" child in her youth, and even as an adult she struggles with letting things go when she feels the other party is being bullheaded or nonsensical. And too, since "bullheaded" is a familial trait shared by both she and her mother, Cymbry is the sibling most likely to be on the outs with Casimira for issues big and small.
She is the least combat-oriented of her siblings. While not helpless, Cymbry would prefer to either keep mobile with a pistol or shoot from far away. She is very much the officer in that while she is capable with the sword she keeps on her hip, it's best utilized for sport if she can help it.
Perhaps because of her more curious nature, she is more interested in Ezhan than Bisera is. Her brother is an intellectual curiosity, a nuisance, and then much, much later, her adventuring buddy. Cymbry prefers to be daring with her choice of expeditions, and since Ezhan likes a good fight, he can have some enrichment by handling any creatures that are on the path between her and whatever artifact she thinks she's located.
Bisera von Valancius
The younger twin, Bisera is quieter and more self-serious than either of her siblings, possessing much of Cas' coldness without the same obfuscating layers of friendliness on top of it. She's very exacting in her expectations, and it's hard to know her true feelings about much of anything except when she's been disappointed. Bisera is perfectly comfortable ordering the lashing of a subordinate with the same tone one would ask for a cup of water.
If Cymbry is the scholar, Bisera is the businesswoman. She makes an effort to know who is interested in what, and why. She even goes so far as to install complex-but-subtle eye enhancing and memorance implants so that she can record objects, people, and events to be analyzed and recalled later on their next occurrence. This also makes her a walking databank for her mother and sister's ever-growing collection of xenotech baubles. (Eventually, Cymbry caves and gets a similar system installed—they share multiple data banks so what information one twin learns, the other can access as well for her own purposes.)
Bisera is heavily tattooed, with many bearing Iocanthan motifs similar to Casimira's. Unlike her mother's, Bisera's tattoos are not ink, but technological: skinplants. Each has a function. Some are made to encode data, connecting her to various private data banks. One in particular connects her to her favorite grapplehawk, a model modified to deliver electric shocks through its talons. Others can be selectively illuminated, useful both for doing work late at night and for dazzling her fellow nobles at parties.
Her love for, and willingness to utilize, cybernetics makes Bisera a ready friend to the malateks of the Expanse. She even commissions weapons from them, usually connected specially to her through a mind impulse unit. (Casimira doesn't see the point of such a measure. What if there is a machine spirit disruption and the gun doesn't work?—of course, the benefit is that if Bisera can't use it, nobody can.)
She takes the longest to warm up to Ezhan. She does not like or trust Marazhai or his spawn. To Bisera's mind, Ezhan is too loud, too reckless, too preening, and not nearly half as clever as he thinks he is. Although, she tolerates him better on the other end of his Gap Decade when he at least has some maturity and life experience under his belt.
Ezhan von Valancius
The miracle baby lovechild of the family, and dreadfully aware of it. Ezhan is the sibling that is the most obviously identifiable as Cas'. Same bravado, same facial expressions, same curly auburn hair and big brown cow eyes that make him look more sweet and sensitive than he actually is. Despite being an absolute terror from birth, he grew up with a much more lenient Cas than what his sisters had. And of course he did. He's a treasure.
As he gets older, Ezhan is more and more Marazhai's creature in looks and personality. Supremely self-absorbed, often careless with those he considers his lessers, and has never blamed himself for any wrongdoing in his life. Part of this behavior is a front, exaggerated to better emulate his father. Part of it is genuine. Ezhan is, like his mother, deeply insecure about his place in the world and tends to work through that by being a dick.
Since he is decades younger than the twins, Cas has him partially fostered with some of the younger Werserians while she's away from Dargonus. Whether they are a moderating influence for him is genuinely hard to tell, but he is closer to these foster-siblings than his own sisters growing up. They are spared the worst aspects of his personality, if nothing else.
Counter to his sisters, Ezhan spurns augmetics on principle and isn't very fond of ranged combat either. His superior Aeldari senses do not need enhancement for one, and should a fight happen, he wants blades in his hands and to be in the thick of things. He takes from Cas a tradition of asking his chirurgeons not to smooth over the nastiest of his scars. Those are badges of honor. (He does have to admit however, that Bisera's skinplants are fun and at least once considers getting one of his own Iocanthan tattoos redone as one.)
Despite Marazhai's insistence that Ezhan should supplant his sisters as heir, Casimira raises her son the same as she did her daughters. This has its benefits and drawbacks. Ezhan never doubts his place as a potential heir, but his sisters are an unavoidable comparison point even if not explicitly said. Thus, he often wavers between throwing himself into a pursuit to show he's better, or becoming apathetic towards a subject to keep from looking like he's struggling. By the time he's old enough to start the more hands-on parts of his training, he still hasn't figured out a calling that interests him enough to pursue.
He's sent out corsairing with Marazhai for his decade of doing Other Things, as Casimira feels like it will help him get out a lot of his restless energy. His time away is also a test. For as much as Ezhan likes to parrot Marazhai's True Kin bullshit, he is not Drukhari. If that spirit stone his mother parents so painstakingly got for him breaks because he can't control himself, he's free to discover what the soulthirst actually does to someone without regular access to Cas' resources to keep it contained.
Cas' malateks will absolutely be working day and night to get a Commorragh-themed one of these on her ship. She probably has a Janus one too but that's not nearly as hard to emulate.
