honestly it can just be a difference in materials. graphite is softer than pen or colored pencil, making it far more forgiving and easier to build up
those are soft lead color mechanical pencils, meant for drawing, but this is a good point all the same. i will go back to graphite and see if i go back to my previous quality 🤞

i have no idea if this can be backed up by science but you know how if you read/say a word too many times it starts to sound weird? could focusing on one subject (like faces) too much affect artists’ brains the same way? anywho to me your recent attempts still look great. the only difference i mainly see is in the material you used, like @shawnnhunter said. the pen makes the lines appear harsher
that may be a part of the issue, for sure. everybody else who has done this challenge (100 Heads) that i've watched do it has only found themselves improving after studying something intently at length though - i'm, as far as i know, the only one whose work is degrading with practice
i really dislike my most recent works, but i'm grateful to know that they may not be as bad as i think! 💛
