From Tumblr to Pinterest
I was struck by the huge similarities but also drastic differences between Tumblr and Pinterest. Both use photo sharing as their primary medium, although Tumblr does offer other options. They both are a way for users to curate things they like and arrange them in one place. However, they cater to fairly different audiences. Tumblr has attracted a more artistic, hipster-y reputation while providing a home for geeks and nerds alike. On the other hand, Pinterest attracts a more lighthearted crowd: wedding planners, sorority women, and housewives with kids, among other stereotypical “girly-girls”. Our class Tumblr takes advantage of the Tumblr personality; it’s hard to imagine what any of our original posts would look like if they were taken out of the classroom context and put in between photos of cakes and crafts. So rather than imagine that, I decided to move pieces of our Tumblr over to pinterest to see what would happen. To do this, I chose keywords from each of the posts (whether that was the title of a post, something that can be taken from its content, or what the image appears to be of), and then looked for something similar using the search bar on Pinterest. Whatever the first image Pinterest deemed most relevant to my search query, I then repinned to a new board dedicated solely to these Tumblr/Pinterest posts. The final board encompasses how our initial thoughts and ideas are translated into the Pinterest world, and what that means for our original posts.
A danger to college campuses (*) by Willeffner
I really think this app has the potential to be great. But like many good things are, it is being abused. Students are posting about being depressed and sexually assaulted and fellow YikYak users are being unsupportive and making fun or making things worth. College police and residential life representatives are being stretched thin from all the problems that are being brought up and caused by this app. Students now have an open forum to post their dorm room and number to encourage underage and illegal drinking that could lead to university probation. There is potential with this app, but I see a lawsuit waiting to happen from all the awful things that are being said and happening on college campuses around the country.

A conversation with my roommate:
Casey: soooo what do you think of yikyak 😊
Roommate: Umm I think it's dangerous and detrimental but also entertaining and occasionally useful?
Casey: you think it can be useful?
Roommate: We happen to be in a community where people are more cognizant about what they say/policing the feed but it's definitely not like that everywhere.
Roommate: Yeah I think it can speed up the spread of information and help people gauge the community's opinions on things.
Casey: so it does hold some merits, at least on some level
Casey: have you been on today and seen the sig chi thing?
Roommate: Yes!
Roommate: And I have - it's all false.
Casey: right but people are believing it
Roommate: True.
Casey: soooo there’s also that aspect
Casey: idk i’m curious if eventually people will have to address specific things that happen on yik yak. like will sigchi have to make a statement?
Roommate: Haha I highly doubt it. If the rumors were about a specific incident then maybe but this'll probably just blow over.
Casey: too bad, i’m kinda interested to see when things from the app will move offline. whether that means the university will have to address it or if other specific entities will
Roommate: Ditto. Hoping nothing that serious ever happens but it would be interested to witness.
