They met at a summer camp when they were 15, and kept meeting after that. Michael wasn't gay, but he seemed to enjoy kissing Lucas, and honestly at this point Lucas was in too deep to protest when he got more than he ever expected. It didn't sink in for Lucas that they were really, honestly, dating, until they were two years into the show. And by then it was too late to back out. Anyway, Lucas rather liked being the guy Michael tackle-hugged in the street. He had gotten used to Michael's eccentricities, and would probably miss them if they broke up now.

Everything about Ben hurt. Charlie stayed anyway, not because he didn't deserve better (he didn't, but that wasn't why) or because he loved Ben (he didn't, and not because he hurt Charlie) but because there were moments when being around Ben took Charlie out of his own head and into a nightmare hellscape where the world turned differently. Returning to his own head after that was a blessed relief.
