Two prompt ideas: One cheats the Secret Santa results so they get one another and/or an AU where one is working somewhere on Christmas Day and the other one has nothing else to do so is there alone (a first meet if you will) :)
A/N: Ooh I love the second one!! Prepare for fluff!
Send me a Caryl Christmas prompt!
The diner was dead, hell, it was hardly a surprise, being Christmas day and all.Â
The quiet jingle from the bell hung to the door had Carol looking up from the cup of coffee she was nursing the cradle of her palms.
Sheâd never seen the man before, he was tall and lean, and not nearly wrapped up enough for how cold it was outside. As those thoughts passed her mind Carol sprung to her feet, taking a clean cup and the coffee pot in tow, hurrying over to where the ruggedly handsome stranger sat.
âCoffee?â Carol offered with a smile that was more genuine than she thought possible to muster when working on her favorite holiday of the year.
âPlease,â the man rasped back quietly, shucking off his worn leather jacket as she poured the steamy drink into his cup.
âCream, sugar?â she asked politely, pausing the flow of coffee until heâd answered.
âNah,â he said with a crinkle of his nose that made her chuckle lightly, continuing to fill the mug to the top.
âAnything else I can get you?â she asked, pulling the small notebook and pen out of her apron.
âYa got any pie?â he asked hopefully, his icy blue eyes snagging hers for just a moment.
Carol shook her head. âNot today, but weâve got eggnog cheesecake, fruitcake and I think we might have some gingerbread men left.â
âIâll pass on the gingerbread,â the man snorted. âIâll give the eggnog cheesecake a go though, if ya donât mind?â
Carol smirked at his questioning. âWell I suppose I donât mind, since itâs my job and all.âÂ
The man gave a small embarrassed smile back, the colour painted on his cheeks not from the cold outside.
âIâll be right back,â Carol smiled, backing away from the table to grab him a serving of cheesecake.Â
She couldnât help but wonder what someone was doing all alone on Christmas day. Part of her felt she should ask, but another part of her knew she shouldnât pry into customers businessâŚ
âSo, alone on Christmas huh?âÂ
Smooth Carol. Real. Fucking. Smooth.
âSorry,â Carol blurted immediately before he had a chance to even think about answering. âI didnât mean it like that, I was meant to say- well I wasnât meant to say anything at all but-â
âI ainât the only one alone,â the guy interrupted with a slight chuckle as he glanced around the empty diner, no offence taken to her rude question.
âYeah, itâs pretty dead in here,â Carol agreed, glancing around at the dump she called work. âYouâre the first customer Iâve had all day.â
The man raised his brows at that. âFolksâre probably at home, overspending on their brats, overeating on Christmas food.âÂ
Carol snickered. âSounds wonderful doesnât it?â
The man threw her a look through a mouthful of cheesecake.Â
âIâll let you eat,â Carol said, going to back away from the table when his voice stopped her.
âCan sit here- if ya want I mean, donât have ta though.â
He looked nervous and Carol fought from smiling as she nodded, going over to retrieve her own mug of black coffee, pot included, setting herself down opposite to him in the small booth.
âIâm Carol, by the way,â she said pointing to her name tag.
âDaryl,â he responded with a nod.
âRhymes,â Carol said with a grin.
Daryl raised a brow at her. âNoticed,â he snorted.
âSoâŚyou donât come here a lot?â Carol asked, although it was more an assumption rather than a question, the tip of her finger playing against the rim of her cup.
âYeah? Howâd ya figure that?â he questioned back, taking a long sip of his beverage.
âI work a lot,â Carol explained. âPlus, if Iâd seen you before, I definitely would have remembered,â she added, surprised at her own shameless attempt of flirting.
It was worth it to see the pink hue return to the apples of his cheeks, ducking his head as he cleared his throat.
âHere on contracted construction work,â he explained through a mouthful of food. âBut I live in the next town over.â
âGood to know,â Carol winked, apparently unable to stop now sheâd started.
âStop,â he muttered, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
âSo that explains why youâre here alone on Christmas day,â Carol stated, draining her cup of coffee before swiftly pouring herself another.
âBut it doesnât explain why youâre here workinâ alone on Christmas day,â he quipped back, pointing his fork towards her.
Carol shrugged her shoulders with a small sigh. She probably shouldnât tell the man she just met her life story, but as far as strangers went this one was turning out to be pretty nice.
âI broke up with my fiance a few months back, and from the time weâd gotten together Iâd lost all contact with my friends, and I never had much family to begin with. I moved to this town because I knew it was somewhere my ex would never come looking for me, so what else did I have to do on Christmas day other than work?âÂ
Way to scare off the handsome stranger.
Instead of throwing her some horrified too-much-information look like sheâd expected, heâd simply nodded in understanding, pushing the crumbs around on the plate with his fork.
âEven if I were back home, Iâd still be on my own. Ainât got no family either, got a brother, when heâs around that is which ainât damn often. Donât have no friends. Iâm moved âround on my job so much ainât got time fer makinâ âbuddiesâ any how.âÂ
Carol felt sad for him but at the same time relieved. It wasnât just her that was alone, she wasnât the only one, which was sometimes easy to forget.
âWell I think weâd be great buddies,â Carol joked, eyes glittering as she met his secretly amused glare.
âYeah,â Daryl pondered for a moment, scratching at the scruff of his jaw. âI spose yer alright.âÂ
This time it was Carolâs turn to glare, kicking him lightly from under the table.Â
âI mean weâve already had our first Christmas together now, I think thatâs a pretty good start to a solid friendship.âÂ
Daryl snickered, nodding his head slightly in agreement. âIâd say it ainât half bad, never spent Christmas with a woman before.â
âMaybe next year Iâll come visit you at the construction site instead,â Carol teased.Â
She couldnât help feel her heart glow at the easy conversation she had with this man. Before she knew it a few hours had passed and her shift was over, Daryl coyly offering to take her for Christmas dinner in a restaurant heâd seen open on his drive there. Carol agreed instantly, maybe a little too over eagerly even, unable to stop grinning at the unexpected turn of events on what started as a lonely Christmas day.
