Cary Huang is so cool and awesome and cute and impressive and responsible for so many iconic early 2010s internet things. I'm sad that he's best known for a cartoon that he made when he was 14.

i delete it cuz i fvcking hate this shit
oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my god
I’m sure it’s been said time and time again, but, revisiting some of CaryKH’s content — with all the new connotations generative AI has — is so surreal.
I remember three-quarters of a decade ago, sitting down to first watch Cary’s videos on machine learning. I remember thinking, “Wow! This AI is so cool! I can’t believe he made a computer do that!”
And now, it’s just… “eugh”.
Not because of Cary, of course. His work should be exempt from AI hate, the content doesn’t come from trying to present an AI’s work as real, but instead from watching Cary himself make his machine learn, walking the viewer through each step. He’s not trying to advertise the produced result as his own, he’s using the produced result as evidence for his work.
In other words, when Cary programs Computery to rap, he doesn’t post it straight onto his channel to say “Look at this cool rap I made!”
Obviously, that’s not AI’s only fault. But it’s just such a shame that the name of artificial intelligence has been tarnished by all these newer, bigger LLMs. Whether you agree with AI usage, or not, or any moderation in between, it’s undeniable that — in the present — the word “AI” sparks debates and arguments and controversy in everyone’s minds.
It’s sad how Cary’s content got so many interested in AI, neural networks, all that. And now, I can’t say things like “I love AIs learning to create art, it’s such a fascinating topic!” without every single negative connotation from the past half-decade coming into mind, a deafening presence while trying to enjoy and discuss his videos.
Cary Huang’s softball team has been disbanded after only a few days.

Cary Huang is working on “fixing humanity.” It is unclear what exactly he means by that.
