As a child, Big Bird was my absolute favorite character, not just on Sesame Street but out of anything I had ever seen. RIP Carroll Spinney! Thank you for Big Bird and the Grouch. Every year, we plant dozens of dahlia seeds to see what new varieties will pop up, and so when this one blossomed into a ray of sunshine with a good attitude, I was so glad to see it, and recognized it instantly as a Big Bird look-alike. Big Bird was a big part of my childhood, and I have fond feelings for this self-identified condor with friendly vibes and relate-able gender. Anyways, I named it Big Bird, posted a photo online, and an old friend from high school (hey Rachel!) told me Carroll (who played Big Bird for nearly 50 years!) was a family friend. She passed my post along to Carroll and his wife Debbie, and she let me know that they thought it was pretty and were grateful for the naming tribute. This year this dahlia was divided into five healthy, productive, upbeat plants, and I was really hoping to send tubers to Carroll! So sad to hear about the passing of Carrol Spinney. He had a huge impact on my childhood and creative development. I don’t even know where to start. This was one of my top favorite books as a child and I was amazed that he wrote and illustrated this too (since he was already a famous puppeteer).
