Cat’s Cradle, a carousel artists’ book by Julie Chen was created using the Artists’ Book Ideation Cards we featured in last week’s artists’ book highlight. This book was created using the deck and displayed in the 2013 exhibition  'Ideation by Chance.' “The cards drawn for Cat's Cradle included the following: Text: self-generated, Imagery: none, Paper: neutral, Color: least favorite, Technique: digital, Layout: across the fold, Structure: Innovative binding, Adjectives: mysterious, spiritual, encyclopedic, organic, lyrical." --Flying Fish Press.

Constructed in a carousel structure with 5 spreads, each with 3 overlapping concertina folds with 3D scenes and laser-cut elements, Cat’s Cradle can be read linearly or circularly. As both object and book, this imaginative tome discusses the nature of existence through its text and form. It brings to mind the circular meanderings of the creative process, too, from it’s inspiration by another book arts project and the unique interpretations each artist brings to their work.
