Mary raises her head to smile up at Marlene and murmurs a ❝ thank you, Lena, ❞ as she places a steaming plate in front of her. Lowering her eyes on the steaming plate, Mary picks up the fork beside it, not yet digging in, much to her stomach’s dismay. It rumbles its dissent as she twirls her fork, turning her head. She can hear Marlene in the kitchen, the sound of plates and pots reaching her in a monotonous, acute noise. There was no need to make pancakes for me, Mary thinks, yet she did.

To cheer you up, Marlene said.

Blinking back tears, she cuts the pancakes into slices. Not caring that in doing so the pancakes will become colder, Mary eats them slowly, savoring each bite; And as the plate clears, fork scratching its well, she leans back against the chair with a sigh. She is feeling better, and not just because of the pancakes themselves; It is also thought put behind their preparation that heartens her.

     AT THIS POINT SHE CAN HARDLY TELL what’s going on. it’s almost as if she’s in some kind of trance or dazed state so deep that she doesn’t feel maki pull her inside or hear the door quietly close behind her. ❝ i... i- ❞ she wants to speak but her lips are quivering and her hands are shaking and she can feel the threat of tears. kaede felt bad for crying in front of maki, but she knew that she shouldn’t hold back or else she’d begin to shut down like an old machine.

     kaede stares at the ground as she makes her way over to the bed. her eyes focused on the door -- why did she feel the need to run? -- as she attempted to speak again. ❝ nightmare. ❞ this was probably the weakest explanation she’d ever given in her life but her companion wasn’t much for words, anyway. ❝ i... i had to see someone. ❞ she’s shaking more now, her shoulders alternating between up and down as if she was already sobbing ( as far as she knew she wasn’t, but she couldn’t tell for sure ). ❝ you know, to... make sure it wasn’t real. ❞

A sense of relief floods through him; merely for a moment of calm. If Ouma really was right about this- then she must have the motive video destined for him. Even if it was just a trick; an elaborate hoax created to jostle him around for hours on end for sick kicks, there had to be someone on there.... right? 

It didn’t have to be family. Harukawa’s video composed of children from an orphanage- a group of assassins of which she was a part of- surely there was someone there that could care about him. His old tennis team, his cat, just anyone to let him feel as though he wasn’t walking around wasting the times and lives of himself and others around him. “Even if it’s just a trick,” he uttered, quietly under his breath to himself. Perhaps it was to give a sense of his desperation- or maybe he needed a reminder that he was still alive. “I need to see it.”
