Shifting away from coal (and fossil fuels in general) is a way of safeguarding the future, not only from an environmental perspective, but also from an economic one. Today’s historically low oil prices – prices were even negative for May futures – should be a wake-up call for Africa’s fossil-fuel producers, such as Algeria, Angola, and Nigeria. Further investment will only make these countries more dependent on oil – and thus more vulnerable to oil-price volatility.
Prof. Carlos Lopes, from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town and the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, on the economic drawbacks of fossil fuels. From Project Syndicate.
The price of fossil fuels has been volatile since the oil shocks of the 1970s. And there is a finite supply of oil and coal and natural gas. Of course we don’t do our planet any favors by continuing to use such fuels. It is both environmentally unsustainable as well as economically risky to continue to rely on such substances for energy.
