hi! sorry to bother u (I don't know if you're getting prompts) buut could u do num 7 "things you said while we were driving" for Carine x Esme. Pleasee
Hey darling! No bother at all 💖💖💖 thank you so much for the inspo!
“Alright. First stop is Cairo, with the change in Frankfurt,” Carine said, flicking through the flight confirmation details on her phone. “We’ve got the passports, the cards, dollars and pounds, and the area that we last knew Amun to be in.”
Esme reached over to take Carine’s hand and she squeezed it. “Everything’s in place,” she soothed. “We’ve done all we can for now, let yourself relax for a while.”
Carine dropped her back back onto the rest and took in a deep breath. It didn’t much help, but the motion of it was something else to concentrate on. At least Esme had the task of driving to distract her.
The car was quiet, the engine a smooth hum over which little was heard but the steady downpour of rain, and the rhythm of the windshield wipers. Carine squeezed her wife’s hand back.
“It’ll be alright,” Esme murmured after a while. “We’ve got friends who will stand with us.”
“What if it’s not enough?”
Esme smiled and pulled up her hand to kiss the back of it. “It will be. Aro loves you like a sister. All he needs is a moment to pause and he’ll see. Just like everyone else, he’ll see that she’s a miracle, not a monster.”
“Do you really believe that?” Carine whispered.
The other glanced over and saw the fear in Carine’s face, the anguish, and she kissed her hand again. “I don’t know. But I hope. That’s all any of us can do.”
In the distance, the city loomed out of the haze of rain and cloud. It wouldn’t be long until they were aboard planes and trains in search of old friends and allies to ask them the impossible: to trust them. To believe their tall tale and to come back with them and stand witness to what no one ever thought could be possible. And to stand against the Volturi? It was unheard of. The whole thing. It was frightening.
“I know,” Esme replied gently. “You carry the burden more heavily than any of us. But lean on me, my love. I’m here to help you carry the load.”
Carine pulled Esme’s hand over her own heart and closed her eyes. “I always know that you are, and that you always have been. But, God, I needed to hear that. Thank you.”
“Always.” Esme carefully navigated the dark car as traffic began to pick up on the wide roads leading up to the city and the airport while Carine did her best to stay calm in the passenger seat. At last, they parked in the lot and did final checks of documents - they had this time chosen to travel as the Hale sisters, a safer choice than travelling as wives - and they gathered themselves.
“We should have made sure you had time to feed,” Esme murmured as she touched the dark circles under Carine’s eyes. “You look hungry.”
“I am,” she admitted. “It’s alright, though. I’ve got crocodile to look forward to.”
“Are there really crocodiles right in the city?” Esme asked, suddenly grinning.
“There were when I last went.”
“Darling, that was before the pyramids had been built.”
Carine laughed. It was a moment of relief from worry. “Maybe so.”
“We’ll just have to see how dated your knowledge is once we’re there, then.”
Carine looked at her wife and her smile faded. “Esme…”
She shook her head. “Don’t. It’ll be alright, I promise. It’ll all work out. Somehow.”
Carine sighed, and did her best to smile. With Esme looking at her, it was surprisingly easy. “Thank you. I do love you, you know?”
Taking her hand between both of her own, Esme kissed her wife’s hand. “I know. We can do this. Together.”
