In the same universe as her book Threadneedle, Cari Thomas sets up a little summer holidays story called The Hedge Witch.
I remember, when I finished reading Threadneedle, thinking how interesting all the variations of magic were in that world, and how it would have been cool to learn more about them. And apparently Cari was thinking similar things when she wrote this novella. It's a little dive into the botanical magic of the world, specifically leaning into Hedge Magic which is as delightfully protective and thorny as it sounds.
This is a story of a summer away from home, of being young and silly, and learning a little bit more about yourself and your strengths, and about your weird extended family. There are excitable teens, small town festivals, suspicious happenings, romantic feelings, and a lot of hedge-work. A perfectly bite-sized and wholesome book.
If I enjoyed eating mushrooms I think I'd grow up to be Winnie. As it stands, I may have to settle for culinary magic of a different kind.
Teenagers and magic is a well-worn subgenre, so it's always exciting when the rules of the magic are different. Threadneedle by Cari Thomas has very different magic.
Some that feel warm and homely, with magic made in the garden and kitchen. some that feels feral and sickly, like the kind made out of poisonous gossip. and some that is binding and tight, like the thread and knot magic that the protagonist weaves. I read Threadneedle much earlier this year but the magic has still stuck with me enough that I didn't even need to flick back through the book to remember what went on. I look forward to see where the curses and betrayals, teen dramas, loves and losses lead when the next part of this story is released.
