People who YOU could help includes parents of disabled children, friends with elderly parents, single moms and dads, or a neighbor who is caring for their ill spouse. Holidays are particularly difficult Holidays mean disruptions from routine, loud noises, chaos and headaches for parents.  Family celebrations might have fewer family members this year due relocation or loss.  As a speech pathologist working in long term care, I frequently get asked "how can I help?"  There are many ways you can help even if you have very little time. Ideas on how YOU could help your friends, neighbors, and family members in need: Offer to visit and "hold down the fort" while the parent or spouse runs errands.  If you can schedule to do this weekly it is very helpful. Offer to pick up groceries or other items for them if you are going to the store anyway. Offer to run errands like dropping bills off, taking dogs to the groomers, dropping off dry cleaning. Chores requiring bending, lifting, or climbing ladders can be difficult for elderly people, such as mopping or changing light bulbs.  Offer to do chores around the house once a week or so. Drop off cooked or easy to make meals or nutritious snacks like fruit.  This is particularly helpful if the person who normally managed meals is unable to cook. Drop off gift cards for money or local restaurants that are easy to get to or deliver. Offer to take them to doctors appointments and take notes.  This is particularly helpful if someone has frequent doctors appointments as with someone who has dialysis or chemotherapy. Send cards, letters, or postcards to let them know you are thinking of them. Phone calls, even if brief, are appreciated. Do NOT give advice on how to cure, manage, or take care of a situation unless asked.  Just listen, and be there for them.  Having someone to "vent to" can be the most helpful thing of all.
