The transference of power was rarely, if ever, a peaceful period. Pearl had weathered three of them with grace and only put up with any necessary deaths. She’d helped a few of those as well. Ghouls were resourceful but still hellspawn.
This particular period had brought about something new for the elder ghoul: grief. It was a knife in her gut but a purposeful one. Grief was a powerful motivator. It had the female straightening errant paperwork and brewing a strong blend of coffee she had heard this new one liked. Being bound to serve the head of the church, she channeled everything into proving this old tool still had some use to it.
Setting down a neat tray of coffee and some kind of snack, she’d wait by the desk, ready to assume the role of assistant yet again. It was time to see what kind of man the Cardinal was. Satan willing, she wouldn’t want to eat him by the end of the day.
