Your team leader hands you an ivory envelope with a silver seal, upon which an image of two swords clashing is embossed. Whichever secretary had been told to write your name has impeccable handwriting.

Once you decide to open it, a dark grey paper is crisply folded three times. It reads the following:

Greetings, KANG SEULGI.

This is a formal notice that you will be placed into Rotation B, as ordained by the Governing Body. We will be arriving for an impromptu observation to see how you perform when group dynamics are suddenly, inexplicably changed. We are intrigued by the Busan League’s high performance and are considering you for an elite mission. It’s of the highest caliber and will possibly require the assistance of humans and/or cards, which is why it is essential to test your adaptability.

The elite mission your league is being considered for will pay generously, as well as contribute to your ranking when an official inspection is scheduled. In addition to monetary reward, we will allot funds to upgrade your training room equipment at HQ.

Currently, we are also considering the Changsha and Saint Petersburg leagues to be assigned this mission. We can only choose one, so know your competition and be prepared to perform. Be brave. Be bold. Be ready to work as a team.

- The Governing Body

Kana isn’t afraid of the governing body. She’s lived four whole years that they didn’t, so they don’t really know what they’re doing, as far as she’s concerned. (There aren’t any resistance members in the governing body, are there? Would she know if there were?)

When she receives the letter she doesn’t even have to pretend she is. She thanks Seolhyun absently, and breaks the seal with her eyes glazed over. She doesn’t have to worry about putting on an act of being shocked or honored, because everyone knows there’s something different about her ever since her transformation changed. They think she’s just now coping with the reality of her father’s death, so she has an excuse for everything– even how ultimately meaningless she finds this letter in the grand scheme of everything she’s failed to die to.

She scowls at the use of Kang Seulgi written, mildly appalled that such a conglomerate knows her full name and doesn’t address her as Kana, but of course they do. She wonders if Taeyong received one of these letters too, and if he did, if he’ll think it’s a ploy to round up everyone with a sign of rebellion in their blood and send them to their deaths. She wonders if he’d have a point.

When she reads on, she manages to hold back her sardonic chuckle for the benefit of anyone that might be observing her. Is the you mentioned her specifically, or the entire league? Either way, she’s both skeptical and intrigued, as Kana often is. Of course you’re intrigued by our high performance. We basically invented magical heroes. Don’t you know anything?

It’s a challenge she accepts, even though she couldn’t reject it even if she wanted to– even if testing her adaptability is laughable. Adaptability is watching your best friend’s spear go through your other best friend’s heart and persisting in living even after you kill his familiar. Adapting is leading the rebellion he died for even as the apocalypse takes the lives of everyone there is to lead. Adapting is surrendering to the ones who killed him for your own survival.

He could very well be a father or uncle figure – why, there’s even a chance he could pass for Santa Claus at the mall. “I see you have quite the situation on your hands,” he says. You glance over your shoulder to see a hero, brandishing a weapon that you’ve become well acquainted with tonight, still hot on your trail.

Before you can answer, the man responds with a cheerful laugh. He rubs his hands together, as though to warm them up.  “Let me see if I can do something about that,” he says. “This old man still has a few tricks up his sleeve, mind you.”

All it takes is a flick of his wrists and a cheerful incantation akin to a nursery rhyme, and it seems as though time itself stops. Leaves that had been blown by the wind are stuck in mid-air, the hero on your trail is frozen in place, and even a stray kitten holds still as a statue. However, it only seems to affect this particular block. The intersection down the street is unaffected and traffic continues as usual, cars speeding along unaware of what’s happening up the road.

“This should give you about ten minutes to get somewhere safe,” says the man. He reaches into his pocket, pulls out a wooden coin, and flicks it towards you with his thumb. You catch it and examine it. You weren’t sure what to expect, but there doesn’t appear to be anything magical about it. The only detail found on the coin is a white lotus flower painted on its face.

“Nobody deserves to be hunted like an animal and punished simply for existing. I’m part of a community that wants to protect people like you,” he says, speaking gently. “If you’re interested in joining us, you just drop that coin into some water. You see where the flower is now? There’ll be an address on it for you to visit. It’s a fancy place – a big, expensive mansion with plenty of food and a place to rest your head. We’d like for you to come visit and potentially, join our little community. You see, there’s something looming on the horizon and we’re worried we’ll be too late if we wait any longer. It might be a little sudden, but time is of the urgency. Speaking of time! Oh, would you look at me! Blathering on while you’re in quite the rush! I’ll be going so you have time to get away from that pesky hero. The beauty of rebirth is its relationship with death!”

In a plume of smoke, the man vanishes.

All you’re left with are his strange words, a wooden coin, and a street frozen in time until you can make your escape.

You aren’t someone who normally receives the morning mail from an owl, but there’s a Snowy Owl perched outside your window. Held in its beak is an elegant, burgundy envelope with your name and address handwritten in black ink. Should you decide to open the window, your winged messenger will take off to the skies after handing you the envelope. You look for a seal or family crest to no avail, yet it still carries the aura of something official. Do you dare open it?

Opening the envelope releases the warm, ashy scent of incense. Yellow flower petals shoot out from the envelope as though they were spring loaded, and they bring with them the refreshing scent of Ylang Ylang oil. You look inside the envelope. As it turns out, its actual contents aren’t as elegant and mysterious as you’ve been lead on to believe.

It’s nothing but a flyer for some store holding a 50% off sale. Ah, marketing tactics these days! You scan some of the offers for this strange place – Yuuko’s Shop, it’s called – and none of them are accompanied by pictures. The coupon expiry dates are odd too, most of them either expiring decades ago or will expire decades from now. You read only some of the deals:

it wasn’t often nayeon felt this way— a deer caught in the headlight, stunned at the very notion someone might try to take her, adrenaline coursing through her veins the moment chase began. while she was strong, even she had had her own weaknesses ( close combat, hand-to-hand, had always been a bit of a weaker strength for her, but that’s what happens when you usually have others do your fighting for you ). this hero seemed advanced, one who knew how to read her movements easily, and she couldn’t help the silent curses running through her mind as she chose to run.

she hated running.

then he appeared, a block in her path she’d been more than ready to avoid, thinking him to be nothing but a simple old human man. however, his words throw her for a loop, voice coming to her as if he stood right in front of her, and as she got closer, the world stopped. or at least, the area around them did.

she barely registers his actions on time, almost dropping the coin, narrowly catching it within her fingers. it’s smooth, an object made with care, and she stares him down after a second. “who the hell…are you?” her words are guarded, eyes narrowing, but he pays her question no mind. her blood boils.

he goes on as if she’d never said a word, like he couldn’t sense the hard glare she was giving him, hands no crossed over her chest in hidden anticipation— anticipation over what? she didn’t know, but if he was here ( despite the annoyance ), there had to be a plausible reason…right? it’s then, before she can even get a word out once he finishes that he’s gone just as fast as he’d appeared, her eyes darting around for him, her guard returning in preparation for time to begin again.

wait, he said to minutes, she thinks, and she’s quick to run off to her safety, not wanting to test the time limit any longer than she needed to. he seemed off, strange, a sudden helping hand nayeon didn’t want to accept, but she couldn’t help but think— where his words of safety true? what did he have to gain by giving help? for all she knew, he could be just another nuisance bent on using the power of cards, no better than heros.

when her team leader decided to step a little bit closer, letter in hand, jisoo knew she was in trouble. it wasn’t too hard of a thing to happen, which only helped fuel her constant frustration - but she didn’t give them a word. instead, all she delivered was a grunt and a roll of the eyes before taking the delivery from the other’s hand.

her eyes paid no attention to detail, breaking the seal opened to get it over with as fast as she could. the extra folding was only meant to be bothersome. maybe some found it mysterious, or even something close to being elegant, but as her fingers started to search for the message inside, the paper almost ripped a handful of different times. although the news inside weren’t as bad as expected, jisoo couldn’t help but furrow her brows at the second line. “B?!”

the rotation groups were supposed to be equals - all under the same stupid ‘spiderlily’ team - but, no matter which context you were in, ‘b’ was always worse than ‘a’. she could feel her blood boiling while her eyes kept running through the sentences. any exciting news they tried delivering seemed to be crushed by some other stupid thing. she’d have to work with humans? and cards? as if any of those things would be good enough at anything to be of help.

how could the governing body even think of trusting them when they had been at war ever since their release? the beautifully prepared letter ended up crushed inside her fist, quickly turning into litter. had they never learned about texting? all the mail they sent out would probably end up turning into trash. but jisoo had no time to think about nature - she already had herself to take care of. when it came to a change in the group she’d always be the first to react, though not normally how her teammates wanted her to.

It’s far too early for there to be excessive pecking at her window. Her eyes glance over towards the lump of limbs beside her; he wasn’t waking anytime soon. A small snort escaped her lips, only her husband could sleep through such an annoying sound. Sitting up, she swung her legs over the bed and slipped her feet into her slippers as she stood; before making her way towards the window of her room. Her son was luckily sleeping in his own bed tonight, so there was a good chance she could sneak in another hour of sleep before having to fully wake up that morning. 

What she saw outside her window, though, made her question her consciousness. An owl was perched outside, an envelope in it’s beak. Blinking slowly, she opened the window and watched as the feathered creature dropped the letter and quickly flew away. Staring down at the letter, she wondered if this was some sort of prank before reaching forward and taking the letter in hand. As she opened it, her eyes quickly got to reading; reading nonsense. Magic Glasses? Owl air mail??? And what did that last part mean? Was it some sort of threat? She doubted it meant anything really, but she couldn’t ignore the fact that an owl just dropped off a mysterious letter. But she could put it off. 

A sigh left her lips as she folded the letter and shoved it inside her purse on her nightstand as she kicked her slippers off and crawled back into bed, curling against her husbands back. 

She’d worry more about that later.

he doesn’t have much thought towards the governing body, leans to no side. though had this been in his first life, jongin would’ve cowered in fear the moment he’d received the letter. it’s different now though, jongin’s lived a life more than they have –– he knows more than they probably would hope to. 

if anything, he feels like it’s a damn disgrace that he’s on a rookie team after all the shit he’d done in the first timeline. but nobody remembers, jongin’s curse would always be his own memory.

he doesn’t pay much heed to the envelope or the way his name is written with such official notice. and then a thought; had the governing body finally caught wind of the rebellion? had they approached jongin to kill taeyong one more time?

the answer is obvious once he finally reads the contents of the paper though. it’s nothing close to that –– the governing body has disappointed jongin once again. he sighs loudly as he holds the letter between two fingers. rotation a? immediately he hopes that he isn’t put in a group of deadweights. 

there’s not really any sense of pride that overwhelms him though, jongin knows he’s been doing a good job, knows that the busan league hasn’t fucked up as badly as they did in the first timeline yet. so to be complimented like this, through a letter no less, it felt like a normal weekday.

the word that does catch his attention though, is elite, and as though by habit he scoffs; his eyes rolling back ever so slightly. “elite?” he says out loud, tone almost mocking. just how much more elite could you get than surviving the apocalypse?
