CARDBOARDS - “GRAVITY’S STILL WORKING”
Naming your very first album Greatest Hits, Volume Two is pretty funny in general, but in hindsight it’s even more darkly amusing knowing that Pittsburgh’s “Cardboards” evidently never got to release anything else, making this their best work by default. At least they quit while they were ahead, having provided a thoroughly enjoyable slice of primitive minimal-wave goodness, from back when electronic music was a lot more frustrated and closer to the spirit of punk. I was surprised to learn the album was made in 1981--usually the American bands are a bit further behind their European counterparts, but accents aside, this feels very much a part of the “Sound of Sheffield” wave.
The absurdist lyrics of “Gravity’s Still Working” could easily be played for laughs, and made into something rather goofy and light-hearted--”it’s snowing, in Hawai’i!”--but between the sparse and ominous instrumentals and how well vocalist “Max Haste” sells us on his frazzled neurosis, it comes across as something rather touchingly disturbed. Just the way I like it.
