Dragon and their riders.
The reason why Daemon and now Omrund is some what likeable. Even though Daemon is not close to be the consistent character he was. It that they are passionate about what they believe. They just go about in different ways. But they are foils for each other.
Is not that hotd lacks heroes. They lack passion.
The most emotional bonds we get are the dragons and their riders but is more a psycho connection and representation of their riders.
Daemon craves intimacy and so so Caraxys that is why he is the most reactive dragon when he sees another dragon. Vhagar didn't kill Luke because she is bloody thirsty but she senses Aemond deep desire for justice though violence. Sheepstealer attacks Daemon because she senses though Rhaena her rage. Rhaena is always portrayed as isolated from her family and so is sheepstealer. Sunfyre was a golden boy that is very affectionate to Aegon because they only have each other and only believe each other. And more than ever is what we see this now. Dreamfyre and Helaena share dreams and dreamfyre hides Helaena own rage on herself and she spend most of her appearance because Helaena is the actual queen in chains. The queen that is powerless. And in a even more Targaryen in chains is Daeron. That hides Tessarion in a cave in chains. In the dark hiding who he is.
Maelys and Moondancer are better in better because Baela and Rheanys are pragmatism. They dance on the battle field.
The last Jace shot is though his dragon eyes. It is a hopeless death the same expression Jace holds in his final moments.
And that is why the dragons scenes always are highlighting moments of a episode too.
