So...tonight we won first place.
And, ALL caption awards.
How?
I don't know, wanna know why?
We had a major tear in movement 2. Like, we have a part, where everyone is turned facing backfield, right?
I cannot see my drum major for the life of me, whenever we do it, whether it be in rehearsal, or in competition. Therefore, I always look for the drumline's section leader, Mercedes. I always find her, because she's either always conducting as well as marching, so if I really need to , I can just look at her feet to make sure I'm in time,if she isn't conducting, because she's always in my sight in this move.
Today, for some reason she wasn't. You're probably just like, we'll look at your drum major, that's what you're supposed to do!
Um, not when you have 2 tubas, 2 bari saxes, a tenor sax, and the drumline all in your way ok. Plus, the fact that all of said people almost run you over because you can't see them coming in the opposite direction, doesn't help the situation either.
So, I ended up just fading out and not playing, because I didn't want to screw everything up. Once we turn back around, to a point where I can now see my drum major, I realize that no body is in time with him.
The look on his face was so sadenning. He was trying so hard to not let everything fall completely apart, considering it was towards the end of the movement. You could see the frustration and fire in his eyes, even I, who was standing all the way near the back-hash.
Brass was all over the place, and pit and drumline had phasing, and everything almost completely fell apart.
A good portion of the flutes (there's 5 of us total, including 1 piccolo-4 flutes, 1 piccolo, if you can't do math) just dropped out completely. I was not going to be apart of a terrible moment in our show, so I stopped playing and came back in when things started to readjust.
It was a good twelve or so, give or take a few, counts that there was this terrible tear in our show.
My director said that if we were to leave the field, with regret, then what good did we do in rehearsal this week?
Wanna know how I felt leaving that field?
I wanted to cry. I knew we had basically just done the WORST show of the season; we've NEVER had problems with movement 2 before. And considering the week before at our home comp, we had done the best show we've ever preformed, it didn't feel good at all.
We get to awards, and they call out third place (there were 3 bands in 4A tonight) and it wasn't us, and I was like "GUYS, ITS OK WE DIDN'T PLACE. WE HAD A SCORE SO LOW THAT THEY JUST DIDN'T EVEN INCLUDE US. IT'S OK." and they come to first place, along with every single caption award, and all you hear is "Mount Olive High School" and my jaw drops.
I was astonished. There was no way that happened. And it's not even like we won by, lets say, 2 tenths of a point.
No, we won by 4 or so points.
Tonight, was crazy, but I won't complain, because I do feel good about getting those trophies.
Oh, but 2 good things did happen :D
Right before awards, they brought all of the bands onto the field, gave everyone kazoo's , and we all played songs. It was amazing . :D
Then, after we got back to the school, me and my friend's all decided to go to Chili's, with one of my friends, wearing his band shirt.
It just so happens that our waiter was in marching band when she was in high school, and I was like "SCOREEE."
Aahah, but nonetheless, tonight was fun. It was definitely surprising, but I had a good time.
Next week: NJStates @ Rutgers Stadium. I'm scared ! :D
