Kell had returned to Red London, his London, late in the evening. After he delivered the message from Grey London to the king, he slipped out a side door of the palace. He’d return later ( he always did ), but for tonight he needed to get away.
Normally the Antari simply travelled from the palace to the tavern with the help of a little magic ( and blood ), but tonight he had needed the walk. The air became crisp as night fell and that meant less people would be out. More importantly, it meant that less people would r e c o g n i z e him.
He knew he had a room back at the palace with a bed that was so comfortable you never wanted to leave, but it had never truly felt like home. Not like how his room at the Ruby Fields felt. He had cut a deal with the tavern’s owner when he was younger and the room at the top of the stairs had become his. it was the one place that was all his.
Kell was halfway across the room, maneuvering around people and tables, when Fauna caught his attention. The owner of the tavern waited until he was in earshot before she told him there was someone who wanted to see him.
Hesitation and surprise washed over him as he glanced over the old woman’s shoulder at the person sitting alone in a dim corner of the room. What could they possibly want with him? He thanked her before switching directions and tentatively making his way over to the table. Before the woman could say anything, Kell spoke up.
❝ Whatever it is you want from me, I don’t think I can help you. ❞
