Hey~ Cool blog and awesome art. But something just dawned on me—if story board revisionist were let go, does that mean that only one season was ordered and made? And if you don't mind me asking, what was work like on Star as a revisionist?
Star was only greenlit for one season, it’s true, but that doesn’t mean a second won’t happen. The reason the crew was let go between (potential) seasons is that the hiatus was too big to keep anyone around. My job ended in August, but the show doesn’t air officially until next month, and season 2 probably wouldn’t be officially greenlit until a couple episodes have aired as far as I know. That’s a long time to sit on your hands and do nothing.
Being a revisionist is weird. It’s one big learning experience. You work under a director on an episode and change things that are a) wrong (like size ratios or character models) b) messy (just cleaning up drawings) or c) need to be changed completely (rewrites and stuff). You basically do as your told, and, if you have a rad director (like all of the Star directors were), sometimes they’ll ask for your input or give you some freedom when you work on a scene. You learn pretty quickly what is and isn’t right for the show and boarding in general. I got a lot of freedom, and I think it really helped me be effective with my humor (I am still learning a lot all the time).
You also have to conform boards…which sucks. It’s just matching the actual storyboard to the animatic, and it’s very tedious. But, actually, that being the worst part of the job means that the job itself is great.
