CapalDAY: Exactly the Doctor We Deserve - Part 3
The third and last part of a video introspective, answering the question, “What’s so special about Peter Capaldi?” Today being his birthday, what better time to reflect on how amazingly nice he is?
That time he thanked each and every single person involved with last year’s projects.
With so many new followers, I can rehash some of my personal experiences as well. The first one starts in February of last year. @springburn59 and I were talking about plausible ways to actually wrap up TTOI. I sent her a wall of text over Tumblr, lots of ideas of how it could be done, and she wanted me to email her a Reader’s Digest version. Tumblr mail being terrible, I happily obliged.
Fast forward to around the end of July, and I had an email from her (Not that she took that long to respond, I just mean this particular email) saying she had a surprise for me. My first thought was that there was a video of him singing, a welcome surprise indeed. I had no idea when I opened that email, the picture that was there before me. I had to blink a few times, I couldn’t believe it.
The last paragraph, that’s me. He read my TTOI pitch, that was never intended to be a pitch! Jane sent it, and he read it. He read it, and he quoted Tom Baker at me. And the autograph included a Doctor Malcolm joke! I’m still not over this.
See? Not over it. It’s in my corner of the Hangar of Shame.
Which is literally, a corner.
I also met him through the Friday and Sunday photo ops at the DWF. Don’t judge me. I brought along Teensytwelve of @teensytwelvestravels, and he asked me all about him, bending a little to be eye level with me. He led me to the mark, and offered to shake Teensy’s hand too, and told me to take good care of him. On Sunday, he remembered my name. I’ve recounted the entire thing too many times to friends who’ll listen. The entire story feels too personal, and it’s not possible to put into words what he’s like.
What I can say is, it doesn’t feel like a divide between actor and fans. He was as eager to chat with all of us, as if he was catching up on years of missed conventions. He truly was a fan among fans. As in my earlier post today, he’s been there. He’s geeked out about how they made the show. He’s drawn the fanart, he’s gotten the scripts. He has truly earned the t-shirt. He’s a fan, just like we’re fans.
What makes him special, isn’t the part he booked, it’s who he is. And for who he is, is why we love him.
Happy Birthday, Peter. I hope you had a good one!
