Modern AU headcanon
Canute's coming out to Ragnar was completly accidental. Canute just kissed Thorfinn and Ragnar saw it when he came home earlier.
He was so scared, because he knows that Ragnar is quite conservative. Canute didn't want to be kicked out from home or disowned.
But Ragnar showed him full support and said that he loves him.
Of course later he did full "what i will do if you hurt my son" speech to Thorfinn.

a) that starts by ragnar fleeing canute (6yrs old) to iceland to save him from a coup d'etat that ended the royal family. him and thorfinn form a short of on-and-off bickering friendship. one day (around 13 yrs old) they sneek onto leif's ship, who is going to trade in the surrounding cities. some stuff happens that will lead to the two joining to askeladd's team. (thorfinn's pov)
b) where instead of askeladd sacrificing himself, he helps and canute to partake in the intrigues of the royal court to bring down sweyn, and any other potential successor to make canute king. meanwhile, thorfinn becomes the prince's most trusted bodyguard. (probably canute's pov)

If Canute at the times of end of Farmland Arc had lower rank or much less power, Thorfinn for sure would try to convince him to go to Vinland.
War at Ketil's farm wasn't directly necessary to Thorfinn's development, because it happened earlier.
Just look at Thorfinn's painfull expresion at first panel, when he mentions Canute's power.
Canute wants to chase him, but Thorfinn knew well it's just impossible, because if Canute leave, there will be no one worth of trust on the mainland. No one who could try stop the wars.
This scene shows that creating peacefull place for Canute is as much important as creating just land without wars for all humanity. Canute is not less important than common people in the eyes of Thorfinn.
But he knows well that Canute's position makes it impossible.
But if Canute were just prince or even bretwalda, if Harald would be still alive maybe...maybe Thorfinn could take Canute to Vinland.
Because he knows that he deserves it.
Because he saw how Canute lost everything.
Because he saw his own story in Canute.
