GREEN IGUANA Iguana iguana iguana ©Laura Quick
At a turn in the road between La Fortuna and Caño Negro, around Muelle, there’s a small bridge marking a spot made famous locally by the number of green iguanas that have taken to hanging out both on the bridge, and in many of the surrounding trees overhanging the water. The story I heard, is that the shopkeeper started feeding the iguanas in the area and the population has now blossomed to more than 200 of the reptiles making it an easy tourist stop as one travels north to Rio Frío and Caño Negro. The animals are huge, docile and close to the road which makes them easy to view and photograph. If you find yourself in the area, it’s a fun and quick stop to make on your way to Rio Frío.
