AuSable Marathon competitor Bryan Bearss, of Anchorage, Alaska, posted this webcam photo Wednesday night with the comment, "I'm watching this webcam carefully for any sign of open water so I can transition from the mountains to the canoe. Listening to friend's stories of paddling in Michigan is making the wait agonizing!" 👉 Bryan explained that the webcam is at Lake Hood in Anchorage and that he won't be training there because that is the world's busiest seaplane base (averaging 190 flights/day!); "his" lake is just a few miles away. By this time last year he had been on his lake training for about a week and he concluded, "It looks like I have a bit longer to wait. Until the ice departs there will be more cardio runs in the mountains." 👉 In 2016, Bryan and partner Mandee Mlcek competed in and completed their first AuSable River Canoe Marathon. AuSable Canoe Marathon Champ and all-time record holder (13:38:08 in 1994) Solomon Carriere shared the first photo and the story below on Instagram back in mid-winter. It is a wonderful story and, so, we share it with you now. .. BTW, Champ, the jacket looks great on you! .. Solomon Carriere posted, "Grayling to Gull Lake. In 1993 I had the honour of racing with my friend Serge Corbin. We won and became 1993 champions. The trophy was a white jacket embroidered with the AuSable River Canoe Marathon logo. .. "On my drive back to Cumberland House I stopped in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan to visit my good friend Joe Hunt, wife Helen, and sons Randy and Terry. I left the trophy jacket with Joe, as a gift, as he was always a sports fan. .. "On February 15th, I attended Joe Hunt's funeral in Gull Lake, as the warm Chinook wind blow across the Prairie we laid Joe to rest. It was an emotional day. At the afternoon visit and feast, son Randy took me downstairs of his father's home. He said, dad said to make sure you receive something. There in his closet the Marathon jacket I put it on and smiled. .. "Driving home, Renee and I stopped in the Prairie landscape of which Joe Hunt loved and made his living from and took the attached photo. Thank you, Joe for being part of my life and help to shape the man that I am. I will miss you." .. Thanks for sharing the story with us, Sol. ..
