Small Group Feedback Session #2
Today after our critiques, you will spend the remaining class time checking in with each small group member for a 15-20 minute studio visit. Use the following questions to guide the conversation and have one person take notes for each artist’s studio you visit. Notes should be turned in to me by the end of class. If I don’t see you, put your notes in my box in the art office.
Start this time by talking through any questions the artist might still have from their 6 small works critiques as well as look at the new work in progress.Â
What is most compelling about the artwork? Why?Â
What is the least engaging artwork in the studio. Why?
What themes, ideas or patterns do you find to be emerging in the works you see and have seen so far from this artist?Â
What new things can you learn about the artist based on the studio space today?
Is there anything significantly different about how the studio is being utilized since your last visit? If so what?Â
How much new work has been made? How would describe this new output of work? What is the next step?
What ideas does the artist seem to be interested in currently? If there are many ideas at work, what seem to be the primary ones? Why? secondary ones? Do you see any contradictions?
What does the studio suggest about the artists current material, formal, and emotional interests?
What does the studio suggest about the artists relationship to process?
What does the studio suggest about the artists thinking about presentation strategies?

Candice Lin, from the Sexual Lives of the Savages series
“The imagery in the drawings from “The Sexual Life of Savages” address cultural anxieties using stereotypical imagery of savagery, violence, exotic rituals, rampant sexuality, miscegenation,and cannibalism. They draw from historical sources ranging from John White and Jacques LeMoyne’s paintings of the New World (and Theodore de Bry’s engravings of them), Casta paintings, and popular advertisements from the 19th century, such as the Pears’ soap ads, that used a visual language of “savagery” in imperialistic and racist ways.”
