Camposaurus arizonensis
Name: Camposaurus arizonensis
Name Meaning: Charles Lewis Camp's Lizard from Arizona
First Described: 1998
Described By: Hunt et al
Classification: Dinosauria, Saurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Coelophysoidea, Coelophysidae
Camposaurus is a very old, early Coelophyid from 220 to 216 million years ago, in the Carnian stage of the late Triassic. It is known from very few bones, however it seems to be very similar to Coelophysis with long running legs, but with enough differences in the shape of the bones to indicate it is a different species, one somewhat smaller than Coelophysis. It is considered the oldest known Neotheropod, a group of more advanced theropods than such animals as Herrerosaurus. It was discovered in the Chinle Formation and Bluewater Creek Formation in Arizona.
