My #wcw this week is Cammie Gilbert of Oceans of Slumber. I’ve talked about her on here before in the past, but I’m doing it again because homegirl slaying the doom metal game. . Oceans of Slumber released a new song a few days ago called The Decay of Disregard and it has been my obsession since it dropped. I LOVE how sludgy the guitars sound and the overall doomy vibe of it. I’m so excited for their upcoming album. Winter was amazing, but I got a strong feeling The Banished Heart will top it. . Cammie definitely stands out in the metal scene. Not just because she’s a black woman in a metal band, but because she has this bluesy voice that both contrasts and complements the music. It adds a dimension to the doom metal scene that isn’t very present in it. But she’s not a gorgeous singer, but is also one of the women who prove black women can not only enjoy metal music, but sing in a metal band. A few other black women in the metal scene (that I know of) are Fallon (ex-Kittie), Alexis (Straight Line Stitch), Honeybee (From the Arc), Audrey (Diary of Destruction), Bridget Fogle (Luca Turilli’s Dreamquest) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Wicked Wisdom). .
