Lake of Dreams Interview With Karina Sher
Angel:Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your style?
Karina:For Lake Of Dreams, Opeth - Damnation album, Lacuna Coil, Aleah (Trees Of Eternity), Faun, Southern Isolation, Myrkur, The Moon & The Nightspirit, Anathema, Antimatter, The Gathering These bands have given me inspiration and elements to how I write music.
Angel: What’s something you listen to that might surprise people, given the music you make?
Karina:I think maybe the more well known artists like London Grammar, Polica, Florence & The Machine, Lady Gaga (album from A Star Is Born), Eva Cassidy. Enigma, Bjork, Tori Amos but these artists are very different from the simple types, their music and style are very unique and emotive. They capture true art and emotion well.
Angel:What’s a non-musical skill, hobby, or obsession that has secretly shaped your music?
Karina:I mentioned fantasy films before and the occult but in this interview I will talk about art like rassouli and poetry that highlights deep emotion. Certainly personal experiences such as the love that I have gone through with someone that has shaped the way I write. "Hold Me" was about the man I love and the dark road we have experienced, highs and lows, and the fear that haunts him that makes him self sabotage. It is something that has shaped my writing in that track. Certainly how society interferes with different races being together, the lies told and how strong you have to be to overcome. I always fight the good fight and activist for anti-prejudices because I believe in a beautiful world where we have peace and tolerance.
Angel:What’s the most rewarding part about doing it all on your own?
Karina:I write the music and it gives me total autonomy to write how I want. John Mitchell plays the guitars, produces and added solo and strings. I write the riffs, lyrics and vocals. He brings it to life in the studio.
Angel:What’s a tool or piece of gear you couldn’t live without in your setup?
Karina:Shure microphone. He plays his guitars.
Angel:What are your favorite venue(s) to play?
Karina:Athena in Leicester was a great venue to play. One of the best.
Angel:What platforms can fans follow you on?
Karina:Facebook and Instagram www.lakeofdreamsband.com
Angel:How would you describe Lake of Dreams as coffee?
Karina:A romantic milky latte, a dark romantic roast but plenty of loving frothy milk with sprinkles of chocolate and cinnamon to finish off on top.
