"THE CAIRN OF MONISTROL-D'ALLIER" Saint-James Way - Camino de Santiago - Saint-Jacques de Compostelle Via Podensis & Camino Francés Day ​3 - Monistrol d'Allier to Saugues (12.2km) Let me explain what a cairn is. A cairn is a human-made pile (or stack) of stones. Cairns are used as trail markers in many parts of the world, in uplands, on moorland, on mountaintops, near waterways and on sea cliffs, as well as in barren deserts and tundra (source Wikipedia). Have you noticed the strange cliff in the background? The odd looking pattern you see, is what is called columnar jointed volcanic rocks. It was formed million of years ago by flow of basaltic lava.
