As a Bill Wattersonesque purist on calvin and hobbes who was actually sort of mad about previous trans calvin posts for reasons you pointed out (fun mad, not murderous mad), nothing has made me happier than seeing your comic. Panthera reminds me a lot - almost exactly, really - of my best friend in the whole world, who died last year. I won't get into it. Your "Calvinball" comic made me cry. Thank you. Panthera also reminds me a lot of me. Not sure what to make of that!
I'm overwhelmed by how many people say I'm so accurate to the comics, and I just hope I can keep it up! Thank you, and I'm so glad Panthera could remind you of someone so important to you <3
I really appreciate that you still have Panthera talk to Hobbes. As someone who still loves my childhood toys is really cool to see a character grow up yet still hold on to their childhood friend!
Absolutely! Hobbes is an essential part of the duo, you can’t have one without the other! I’m being very deliberate in keeping Hobbes and his presence just the same as the original comic — that perfect balancing of two worlds in one, Calvin’s and everyone else’s, was a big part of the magic for me.
i really like your calvin and hobbes comics and i know you've gotten a lot of praise for how well-written they are so i'd like like to also mention you are REALLY good at nailing bill watterson's art direction. not just in terms of "the characters look like themselves" but specifically the paneling and the environments and the posing and the way that it weaves so seamlessly into the punchline just. there's so much love in it all. its so clear to see that these are strips made by someone who deeply loves and understood the comic and took it to heart. there's this distinct authenticity to it that i feel really needs to be appreciated
Thank you!! The paneling especially has been one of my favorite parts. I know Watterson is praised for taking comics as an art form and really treating it like art, and it's been a lot of fun during my studies of his style to see how that comes out in terms of cartooning and pacing!
As an example, it seems like nearly half of his comics have at least one (sometimes more) panel missing a border, often being used as emphasis in some way, either as setup for the joke or as an introduction to the scene. When there's multiple missing, it helps emphasize a flow from moment to moment! Also, speech balloons in those panels don't have borders either!
I hope bill watterson happens upon your comics and declares you the true heir to the Calvin and Hobbes vision, you're just that amazing
I think the wonderful thing about Calvin and Hobbes is that Calvin had room for everyone to see themselves in him! I really love this interpretation of where that path could have gone, but we’re all heirs to the story, in the end
Besides, Panthera wasn’t even my idea, even if I’ve been exploring where it could go! Thank butch-king-frankenstein for the vision of truth!

i really hope you're gonna make more of those calvin & hobbes comics cause i DESPERATELY need to see how things shake out w susie
I’m still going! I’ve got a whole little arc imagined out. No guarantees about how quickly I’ll be able to post, but I’m gonna publicly say that I’m gonna try to do at least one a week (maybe more, depending on how work treats me). I’m getting faster as I learn the shapes, which is nice!
I can imagine Calvin being horrified to meet Panthera because the idea of becoming a girl is terrifying to him... then after three minutes he goes "Wait no, you're cool! I like you!"
.
I'm another transgender weirdo coming to thank you for Panthera. Seeing the first comic (faer under the tree - is that the first?) made my month. It's perfect. Watterson would love it.
That’s the first, yep! I sure hope he would, but regardless I’m so glad you all do!
