‘Folding The Prism’ Work by Jessie and Katey in Callowhill, Philadelphia.
Callowhill thesis project
Rachel Marcus, our 4th year student assistant working with us for the last 3 years, is finishing up her senior year sheltering at home. She shared with us her work on the Callowhill area of Philadelphia for her honors thesis, and her future plans.

I am a History and Comparative American Studies (CAST) double major. I’m from Philadelphia and have been working on an honors thesis about a neighborhood in Philly called Callowhill that is undergoing rapid redevelopment. A real estate developer has taken special interest in Callowhill and has taken great strides to upscale it and attract new residents in addition to multiple other projects. I’m interested in exploring how residents who hold differing beliefs about the changes in Callowhill either contest or support the development, as well as understanding how these negotiations speak to a longer history of urban change in Philadelphia. I am doing this project in CAST but since it has so many overlaps with Urban Studies, I have gained a really profound interest in that field. The job market is clearly looking pretty dire at the moment, and so I don’t have my expectations set very high in terms of next steps... I feel pretty certain that graduate school is in my future, though that is a couple years away. Through working at the Archives at Oberlin and doing some archival research for my thesis, I have come to love archival work so much! I hope that even though I’m graduating, I’ll continue to do that work and explore the archives.
