Around 4:30AM I awoke to the smell of smoke.

My master bedroom has windows on three sides so I could see an orange glow in the hills all the way around the house. I ran downstairs and opened the door as a fire truck drove up to my house. “Get out!” The fireman yelled, “The fire is HERE!”

I grabbed the leashes, wrangled the dogs into the car, I came back and caught 3 of the 4 cats. I grabbed my passport, laptop, camera, memory cards, backups and I was gone. I was wearing pumps (?), a shirt I hate, sweats. No jacket. I didn’t grab any clothes. There wasn’t time to do anything else. I left behind all the birds closed in their pens, my 93 year old wooden house, an SUV. Everything I own.

As I was pulling out of the driveway, the fire crested the back hill and was racing toward the house. It was crazy windy and I didn’t think there was a chance in hell that the house, any of the outbuildings, or any of the birds would survive.

There was no one on the road as I drove out in the smoke. When I exited the canyon I pulled over and parked. I got out of the car and started calling my neighbors to make sure they were awake, knew to get out, and were okay. Soon, people started coming out in a steady stream, some parked, some drove through. The ones that parked got out and we stood there, clinging to one another not knowing what to do. It’s terrifying. In that in that hour 15 of my neighbors lost their homes, fortunately no one died, but all of our lives were changed forever.

As it turned out, my house and all of the birds survived the fire. The peacocks all took off and came back. The cat survived and showed up a few days later, hungry but none the worse for wear. I was lucky, but no one got off scottfree - my property was burned, it smoldered for days afterward flaring up and having to be extinguished. It smelled like an ashtray for nearly 4 months. When the rains finally came, and they always do after a fire, we had two mandatory evacuations called due to mudslide danger. That danger will remain for the next 4 years. The canyon is green now, if you didn’t know, you would never guess how much of the area was blackened by the fire.
