Joshua Hedley Brings His Acclaimed Debut Album to Rough Trade NYC
After years as a Nashville, Tenn., sidemanāand supporting the likes of Justin Townes Earle and Robert EllisāJoshua Hedleyās (impressive) debut album, Mr. Jukebox (stream it here), arrived this past spring (on Third Man Records), but thereās no mistaking his throwback ā60s-country influences: āSo many of my contemporaries dabble in a classic sound but thereās always some sort of new innovative twist. My new innovative twist is that there isnāt one,ā Hedley told Rolling Stone. āItās important to exercise your creative muscles, but for me the genre of country music was perfected in 1965 and anything after that, albeit good, was experimentation. When it comes to making country music, my mantra is, āIf it aināt broke, donāt fix it.āā Thatās exactly what the singer-songwriter and fiddler has done on his first album. āMr. Jukebox aināt broke. In fact, itās as pure a country record as any youāll hear, one that comes from the smooth gospel-tinged side of the genre more than the hardcore twang side,ā raved Paste. āAnd thatās just as well, as the former offers more opportunities for Hedley to showcase his voice, a buttery baritone he commands with impressive control.ā Catch Joshua Hedley (above, performing āThese Wallsā) in mid-tour form tomorrow night at Rough Trade NYC. Another talented Music City musician, Cale Tyson, opens the show.
