𝒊𝒊.  𝒕𝒉𝒆   𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆      .    the   story   goes   that   the   former   high   lord   ,   varkon   baravau    ,   sought    power    in    the   hands   of   the   elden    jezibaba   ,    offering    the   name   of   his    first    child    in    exchange    for    power    .    jezibaba    ,   with    her   spindly    white    hair   and   hollow    eyes   ,    offered   him    a    necklace   of    teeth    ;    a   curse   ,   a   curse   ,   a    kingdom    for     a   curse    .    the    elden    one    kept    her   promise   ,   giving    the   power   to   varkon    he  so   sought   ,   but   not   without   a   price  ;  madness    trickled    in    like   the   first    flakes   of    winter   .       while    king   varkon   grew   mad    with    power   ,   the   first   baravau    pup    was   delivered    .   troian    the     wind    whispered    on   the   day   of   his   birth  ;  somewhere   in   the   medved   forrest   ,   a   hut   began   to   crawl   . 

𝒊𝒊𝒊. 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓 .    a   mad   king    and   a   court   shrouded    in   secrets   ,   the   echoes   of   the   curse   reverberated    throughout    the   walls   of   winter’s    palace   .    a   charitable   mother   raised    the   two   heirs   of   the   winter   court    while   the   high   lord   grew   more   and   more    mad   ,   often   neglecting   his   heirs   in   their   youth   .   hope   began   to   swelter   in   the   winter   court   as  the   young   lord   grew   without   an  impediment   to   his   health   or   mind   ;   slowly    the   curse   began   to   fade   from   the   people’s    minds   ,   simply   a   tale   told   to   kids   who   did   not   know   better   .   the   day   the   young   lord   received   his   powers   marked   the   first   day   of   winter’s    eternal   torment   .  

𝒊𝒗.  𝒕𝒉𝒆  𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆   𝒘𝒐𝒍𝒇 .    it’s   said   that   the   high   lady   died   with   a   great   sorrow   ;  a   husband   lost   to   paranoia   ,   and   a   son   lost   to   wolves   .   the   queen   passed   in   a   death   unforeseen   by   anyone   ,   not   even    her   heirs   who   mourned   the   loss   of   their   mother   .    the   young   high   lord   ,   the   soon   to   be   high   lord   ,   sought   remedies   for   his   curse   ,   seeking   out   the   very   creature   who’d   spoke   the  fateful   words   that’d   imbued   in   him   a   wolf   .   but   no   such   creature   to   be   found   ,   just   the   wind   and   its   terrified   whispers   .   with   no   remedies   to   remove   the   curse   from   the   young   high   lord   ,   the   doors   to   winter’s   palace   closed   ,   becoming   shrouded   once   more   in   a   veil   of   uncertainty   and   secrets   .  none   outside   the   winter   palace   spoke   of   curse   ,   they   could   not   know   that   inside   the   walls   of   the   palace   ,   a   half   man   ,   half   monster    prowled   .   

𝒗.   𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓   .    the   winter   court   is   perhaps   one   of   the   most  solitary   of   the  courts   ,  infamously   hard   to  infiltrate   and   harsh   in   doling   out   punishments   to   anyone  who   tries   .   since   becoming   high   lord   ,   troian   baravau   is   sparse   in   his   public   appearances   ,   having   been   seen   by   few   and   known   by   virtually   none   outside   of   winter’s   palace   .   the   winter   court   remains   as   an   outsider   among   the   courts   ,  being   hard   to  negotiate   with   and   certainly   being   notoriously   difficult   in   any   diplomacy   .   what   remains   to   be  true   and   evident   to   everyone   is   that   the   winter  courts   ambitions    is   far    reaching   and   a   possible   danger   to   any   potential   alliance   the   high   lords   and   ladies   of   vessir   hope   to   keep   .

lysander andora was the third child of the high lord and lady of the spring court. he always had an affinity for animals, regularly found in the gardens with half a dozen pets of all species around them. as they grew, they learned to shift into these animals, and quickly figured out that the form of a cat was highly conducive to sneaking in and out of the manor  —  this became a favourite pasttime of lyle’s, sneaking out and sitting atop a sunlit wall in the marketplace in the shape of a tortoiseshell cat with vibrant green eyes.

when their education began, lysander gravitated immediately towards botany. being immune to poisons and toxins made it easy for him to learn what deadly plants might taste like in food, which gave way to figuring out how to disguise those flavours when trying to poison someone else  —  though they did that outside their lessons, to avoid concerning their teacher, and dedicated lesson time to learning about healing with plants.

outwardly, there are certain traits expected of a high lord, especially of the night court. cold, distant, professional, decisive — all things jaehwan is perfectly capable of being when the situation calls for it. they have always been very shrewd in such interactions, careful with their words and capable of manipulating others into doing what they want if the situation calls for it.

but in private and around those they trust, they are rather less cold and calculating — protective of their younger siblings, possibly even warm at times. though they never open up themself, not even to their family or friends — their burdens are theirs and theirs alone.

.     𝙱𝙸𝙾𝙶𝚁𝙰𝙿𝙷𝚈

the eldest child of the high lord and lady of the night court, jaehwan was raised with the intention that they would take over from their parents when they were old enough to rule. this meant lessons in everything that a ruler might need to know from the moment they were old enough to read and write, something that they found hideously boring. but as an only child for that part of their life, they had no choice — their parents were hardly going to be more likely to let them go out into the city with friends if they were skipping classes.

as a consequence of all this, jaehwan grew up quite isolated, only seeing others their own age when they managed to sneak out of the palace or when there were gatherings of the courts and other noble children were present.

they were three hundred and ninety-five when they went from being an only child to having siblings. already well on the way to preparing to take the title of high lord, they were cautious not to appear too invested in their siblings’ lives, lest people use those bonds to coerce them in any way — but even hundreds of years of lessons could not fully harden their heart.

jaehwan ascended to the throne when their siblings were still young, their parents old enough to have lost interest in ruling. to anyone who asked, they would claim they were not bitter, but — well. they had a poor imitation of a childhood, their parents always busy with other things and them always trapped in lessons. and intellectually, they knew—know, have always known— that as the next high lord they would never really have genuine freedom. and they love their siblings, would never wish that kind of childhood upon them, but... bitterness can coexist with love and logic and kindness.

they have been ruling for barely a hundred years and are already weary of it, wondering how their parents endured for so long. perhaps it will be easier with a partner by their side, though with that will come new challenges — the expectation of romance, of children, things that they will not, cannot provide. every day, the urge to brush away the facade of coldness loses out to the knowledge that this facade is imperative to maintaining their image and their court’s image.
