@cursed-herbalist I didnโt really have a direction to go with this lmao and Iโm sorry this took forever, but itโs Halloween so I had to finish it! Eli and Cairnstern my beloved โค๏ธ hope you enjoy! Lydia Ellis, who belongs to @mjs-oc-corner, is mentioned in passing.

Eli knew the story of his great-grandmother Emilieโs life very well. She came from humble beginnings, grew into a talented witch, found she had intriguing divination powers, predicted the deaths of everyone she held dear, and drove herself insane. His grandfather told him that story and his father Maurice dismissed it. But Sandy wasnโt a liar. He was the most trustworthy person Eli knew. And especially since Emilie was his own mother.
According to him Emilie was haunted by death. Her own parents had died young, leaving her and her two sisters behind. She saw her first dead body at age nine. And by the time she reached eighteen she had already predicted thirty-five deaths, with seven predictions coming into fruition shortly after. When Sandy was sixteen, Emilie predicted her own death- never muttering them details to anybody- and eventually it changed her entire persona and she couldnโt live with her demons anymore. Sandy said her ghost wanders the moors near his childhood home, wailing in agony. The image was ingrained into Eliโs mind and the thought alone gave him shivers. It wasnโt great when, at seven years old, he had nightmares about it.
The whole thing seemed so preposterous. But in the Wizarding world anything was possible. And when Sandy told Eli the tale for the first time, he could see the tears welling in his eyes and his skin turn pale. It was real. It was chilling.
The moment that Zelda heard of Emilie in passing, she had to know all about her. And when better to ask Eli then when Oscar had joined them after classes to do some extra Ancient Studies work?
โI canโt wait to hear more about your dadโs finds in the Saudi desert,โ Oscar exclaimed as they headed to the classroom. โThat statue he mentioned sounds interesting.โ
โI know about something thatโs far more interesting,โ Zelda smiled. โJust you wait.โ
Eli was sat at his desk marking his sixth yearsโ most recent assignments. The paper he was reading made him sigh exasperatedly and he didnโt even notice when Zelda and Oscar walked into the classroom.
โHey, Pop!โ She beamed.
โZelda?โ He checked his pocket watch. โGoodness me, is that the time already?โ
He shifted his papers to one side and straightened out his waistcoat as he got to his feet.
โI hope you two are studying hard for your OWLs,โ Eli then added, opening the cupboard behind the desk.
โSure are,โ Zelda replied proudly. โIโm helping Oscar study for Herbology tomorrow morning and then weโre studying Charms with Lydia.โ
โThatโs great. Promise me that youโll make the most of your time. I want you both to do your very best.โ
โPromise,โ the two said in unison.
โGood. Now where did that statue goโฆโ
As Eli rooted through the mire of books and artefacts piled in the cupboard, Oscar leaned over to Zelda and lowered his voice.
โWhatโs this interesting thing you were talking about?โ
She winked. โYouโll find out.โ
โAh!โ
With a triumphant smile, Eli pulled the statue from the cupboard. It was about the size of a book and in the shape of a man with squared edges. He sat back down and cleared his throat.
โNow, thereโs some interesting family history where this particular statue is concerned and when-โ
โPop?โ Zelda interrupted.
โYes, Zelda?โ
โSorry to interrupt you, but weโre on the subject of family histories, can you tell us the story about great-great grandma Emilie?โ
Hesitating, Eli frowned. โOh, I donโt know. Itโs a dark, dark tale and Oscarโs here-โ
โOh, come on, Pop!โ She interjected excitedly. โPlease? Oscar likes ghost stories, donโt you, Oscar?โ
The young man nodded. โEspecially if theyโre a true story.โ
Eli sighed. He knew that Zelda wasnโt going to give in and that Oscar was now too intrigued to let an opportunity to hear such a story slide.
โAlright,โ he then said, watching as the two students exchanged an excited glance. โBut you mustnโt go telling it to anyone else.โ
And so Eli told the story exactly how it had been told to him. Zelda and Oscar listened intently, the latter quickly deciding that the story was, in fact, more interesting than the statue. It was heartbreaking, tragic, and Oscar would hate to see Emilieโs ghost knowing what sheโd been through.
โHave you got anymore family stories?โ He asked following the tale.
โPerhaps another time,โ Eli uttered, but before he could continue Zelda burst into laughter.
โWell, thereโs the story about the time that Pop and I went to South America and it was really dark and because it was so dark we didnโt the chupacabra and when we went to sit by the fire the chupacabra jumped up and bit Pop on the backside-โ
โZelda, no, not that story!โ
