Redid an old piece in honour of @hobbitsetal finishing the first draft of "Mute", a story so close to my heart
Part 2 is finally here
[ID: A watercolour painting of a dragon with green fur standing before a grave in a misty graveyard. He is turning away from the camera so that his brown hair which is long on one side covers his face, his tail with a ridge of long fur the same colour as his hair is curving away from the viewer. He has golden wings and is wearing am indigo shawl with little specks of glittering gold. There are some candles as well as a small burning sacrifice in front of the grave. End ID]
You like gays? You like Halloween? You like disabled characters?
Have a Cahan scribble that’s definitely got so many cannon errors. Like, Halloween has a distinct “Pagan ideas filtered through christianity and then modern culture(especially regaridng graves and such)” vibe that wouldn’t work for Ilisia (because no significant christianity), but I just wanted to draw the vibe (tm) rather than do extensive research into possible pagan rituals/relations to death and funeral practices in X region so, yea.
(Also, Cahan is dyslexic and has three legs but I admit it’s really hard to tell with this pose.)

Harte, Cahan, and Crane
A/N: I wrote these opinions for an assignment. These are my interpretations of these specific pieces of American Literature. If you are easily offended, be cautious when reading these reading responses. Honestly, most of these responses are just me trying to meet a word requirement and they should and are meant to be taken lightheartedly. Also, I am editing some of these responses as I post them because my opinions changed, or I wanted to say something better than what was originally written. I will be happy to discuss these responses further, just please be nice :)
Warnings: these are generally weird stories
Harte – “The Luck of Roaring Camp”
I liked that Harte jumped right into the storyline - I know there is a word for it, but I do not remember what it is. Harte talks about how there is only one woman in Roaring Camp, and she is having a baby. The baby ends up having to be fed a donkey’s milk and the author makes an allusion to Romulus and Remus in Greek mythology. As the baby’s life goes on, he is named Thomas “Tommy” Luck by the men of the camp.
I liked this story because it was very Greek Mythology-esque. Harte’s work read like I was reading about some god, goddess, or demi-god, like the story of a legend. I also liked the part where Hart says something about the strongest man having three fingers and the best shot having one eye. I felt as if Harte was saying a person’s disabilities do not matter, only their strengths.
There was a total of one woman in this story, and she gave birth to a boy. The men in Roaring Camp had debated bringing other women into the camp to take care of Tommy, but they decided against it. I really think Tommy’s mother was a prostitute in Roaring Camp, and I think all of the men took the “father” role for Tommy because they really did not know who the father was.
Cahan – “Sweatshop”
I hate long sentences, and the entire thing was made up of long sentences. The whole first paragraph is one sentence. I felt tired reading these sentences that just seemed to go on forever.
Cahan’s word choice was weird. The author would be describing the Jewishness of this family and then, all of a sudden, throw in a word like “siesta.” The whole story was just a very weird read and I did not like it at all.
Also, it is weirdly important to this author that the reader knows that this family is Jewish. I later learned that this is because the author is Jewish, but he really wanted the reader to know that this family is Jewish. I mean, he REALLY wanted you to know.
Crane – “The Blue Hotel”
I like the immediate explanation of the title “The Blue Hotel.” I like that he compares the color blue to the color of a specific bird, no matter how much I hate birds. I felt like this story read as though the author forgot to include a plot most of the time, that the plot of “The Blue Hotel” was an afterthought.
This story was weird, too. Throughout most of the story a man was referred to as “the Swede,” but then all of a sudden the other men think he is really more of a Dutch man, and then he’s Swedish again. It does not make sense. Also, the sentence, “In his eyes was the dying swan look,” threw me for a loop. What exactly is a “dying swan look?” What does that look like?
A/N: I highly suggest Googling (?) what a dying swan looks like. You will not be disappointed! Also, all three of these stories really push their own ideals of what men should be like and what masculinity is to each author.
