Race Essay
Long ago, the White people left their homes and explored for new lands. Along their journey, they encountered a group of people they've never seen before, which are Black people. Instead of being nice and trying to make new friends, they took the people back to their home land and used them as slaves. That went on for a long time. Even though Black people are no longer used as slaves, they are still discriminated against and experience many hardships because of their skin color. Black people do not have control over their own lives. Langston Hughes was a man with dark skin who wrote a poem about not letting go of dreams. Parts of the poem hinted that he had to let go of his dreams. A reason why he had to do that was because of his race, so he couldn't do as he pleased. In America, people with dark skin have more complications in their lives than White people. Hughes didn't have control over his life or his dreams. Recently, there was man named Eric Garner who was murdered by a police officer. He was selling cigarettes when a cop put him in a choke hold until he died. Although that was recorded by a witness, the cop was decided not guilty. Garner did break the law, but it was not as bad as the punishment. He died when he didn't need to. He did not have control over his life or even his death. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya thinks about wanting to kill all the White people because she sees how unfair it is for the Black people. She knows that her life is already planned out for her. After she graduated, she would have to start working immediately instead of going to college and studying more because that is the way that she is "supposed to live." That is the lifestyle of a person with dark skin. Maya does not have control over her future at all. These are situations that happen in real life. Although discrimination improved throughout time, it still happens in some areas. A common situation now is many Black people do not have control over their lives because they end up getting arrested or killed by White police officers. Most of the time, they are not even doing anything too bad. It is unfair that a certain race have all the privilege and rights in the world while another race can't even choose whether they want to live tomorrow or not.
