Forrest was recently diagnosed with CAE (Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis), a virus that commonly affects goats (not sheep or humans). Rescued from horrific conditions after a dairy auction and meat market (from the back of a pick-up truck) as an infant, UC Davis warned us that he would likely have a plethora of health issues throughout his life, and he has been lucky to make it to 4-years -old with no problems until recently. We noticed some weight loss, joint swelling, and minor lameness, and a quick blood test revealed the culprit. Forrest will now be receiving daily medication to help with the arthritis symptoms and we are monitoring his weight to make sure he doesn’t lose too much. CAE can be controlled and symptoms treated to an extent, but never cured. Barnaby has been exposed of course, since they’ve lived together since infancy, but luckily is showing no symptoms.
