The way language changes has always interested me. I know that lately, people are up in arms about the use of the word 'literally'. One that has always bugged me is 'decimated'.
'Literally' means both definitively *exactly* what is said, and also, in the current socio-linguistic climate, 'I am being hyperbolic, don't bother correcting me'. 'Decimated' means reduced by 10%, and over the last few decades, 'almost completely destroyed'. Both of these changes are out in the world whether we like or approve of them or not.
But someone just told me that her vegetable patch was 'literally decimated' overnight. And I am still cackling about it. Does she mean that exactly 10% of her plants have been destroyed? Or is she telling me that she feels like it's been *completely* destroyed?
Language is amazing.
