I finally found the one thing in life I love to do. When I’m sitting in the pilot seat of a 2-seater Cessna–when I’m up in the air, really in the zone–I don’t think of anything that’s wrong in my life. All of my sad thoughts disappear, and I become totally immersed in the controls, and fall totally in love with the view. I don’t think about my day job. I don’t think about relationship problems. I don’t think about upcoming appointments. Flight school is the one place in my life where I’ve found I can be truly in the moment, and I love it.
The thing is, this was never part of my “plan.” I graduated high school with plans to be a novelist, went to college and did astrophysics research, earned a bachelor’s in business and English, and found a job in the nonprofit sector.
So to answer the age-old question, “What can you do with an English degree?”
You can save some cash with your first job to pay for flight school, become a pilot, and live your wildest dreams. Or do whatever the hell you want. That’s what.
High school isn’t the end. Your college degree doesn’t have to limit you to certain checkboxes in life. Your first job doesn’t have to be your last. Life is dynamic, and you’re never too old to keep dreaming and achieving.
