BARANGAY 397's APPROACH TO DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MANAGEMENT
The Barangay 397 was located at the district of Sampaloc, City of Manila. I chose this barangay so that I could also know their practices regarding Disaster Risk Reduction because the dormitory that I’m currently living is only beside this barangay. During the interview with the barangay kagawad, I’ve learned a lot of lesson and information on how they maintain their barangay safe during disasters.
With regards to kuya Ferdinand Comitan, he informed that the most common disaster they experience is flood. Their place is prone to flood especially during storms because their road is somehow low compared to others. He mentioned that the problems they are facing during disasters are gradually disappearing because they always inform their residents about the incoming or possible disaster that would occur within the area so that they can prepare theirselves and also their friends and family as early as they can to reduce severe accidents such as destruction of properties which can often led to multiple physical injuries of people and worst, loss of life.
Barangay 397 always makes sure that their residents are always safe, because of that, they own a small tricycle that the barangay watchman could use everynight to look out for incidents and also to make sure that the teenagers or students are safe when they go home due to the reason that their barangay is very close to Universities and even dormitories.
It is important to address the issues of disaster in our country for the citizens to be able to know all the things they need to know and to be aware on what they can do to mark themselves safe. The government officials should remind and let us know the possible disasters our country would face so that we can prepare in order to prevent serious accidents.
As a member of the community and this nation, the only thing I can do to address the vulnerabilities is to engaged in seminars or projects regarding Disaster Risk Reduction Management. By this, I can share information to them on how they can be safe I can apply all the things I’ve learned to help other people. I can also encourage them not to just ignore these reminders from the government official because it is for their own safety. Lastly, letting them know what to do and what not to do can save a person’s life.
