First Decentralized Witness CandidateâââRogier Eijkelhof
First Decentralized Witness CandidateâââRogier Eijkelhof
First Decentralized Witness CandidateâââRogier Eijkelhof
Rogier Eijkelhof from The Netherlands
This is the moment weâve all been waiting for. After 22 months of all publicly known witnesses being operated by founder Tony Churyumoff, we have finally arrived at the point where the network is gradually going to be decentralized!
I am very pleased to introduce to you our first decentralized witness candidate: Rogier Eijkelhof from The Netherlands.
I urge you all to watch this video interview to get to know him better.
If you donât have time to watch the whole interview Rogier also wrote a short summary of his crypto projects and his software company:
âArnhem Bitcoincity is our project we started early 2014. We were enthusiastic about Bitcoin (or cryptocurrency in general, but that was mostly just Bitcoin back then) but there were very limited possibilities to actually use Bitcoin in practice. Our goal was to make Bitcoin more accepted, more accessible, and more used for every day payment purposes. In order to do so, we approached several business in Arnhem, The Netherlands (where we live) explained them about Bitcoin, and offered them a way to accept Bitcoin very easily.
And more importantly, free of charge or risk or volatility or investment or technical hassle. For this purpose, we developed BitKassa (more below), which started out as a Bitcoin payment processor. We wanted to make sure there was absolutely no barrier (technical, financial, practical, or otherwise) for any merchant to give Bitcoin a try.
We started with 15 merchants (mostly restaurants and pubs) and nowadays there are almost 120 shops, businesses, and other places here in Arnhem that accept Bitcoin. In May 2019 we will celebrate the 5th anniversary of Arnhem Bitcoincity!â
âBitKassa is our Bitcoin payment processing service. We started this mainly as a tool for merchants, to make it as easy as possible for them to accept Bitcoin. Using BitKassa is really a no-brainer, it was developed with the goal to allow any employee of any business with any random internet device (phone, tablet, laptop, whatever) to accept Bitcoin immediately.
Whenever a customer wants to pay with Bitcoin, the merchant (or their employee at the cash register) simplify specifies the amount in euros. The customer is charged the equivalent amount in Bitcoin (based on current market price, we add zero fee, this is a free service) and as soon as the customer sends the bitcoins, we convert it to euros and the merchant receives the amount on their bank account.
Of course we try to stimulate merchants to actually not convert the bitcoins to euros, but just keep the bitcoins instead. Fortunately, more and more merchants are doing so. Our ultimate goal would be for merchants not to depend on services like BitKassa anymore, as they could simply have their own wallet and customers can pay to the merchantâs wallet directly. But thatâs obviously a slow process and probably something further down the road. For now we are still in an early adoption / migration phase, where a service like this can help people to make the switch and give crypto a try.
Besides the payment processing service, we later also added a broker service where anyone can directly buy or sell bitcoins. Unlike the payment processing service, this broker service is not free, we charge a small commission rate (currently 1%). This currently generates some income which helps us keeping the payment processing service free.
Note that so far we have been doing Bitcoin only, but obviously we are looking at other crypto currencies as well.â
âBenVista is my main business (I co-own the company) and my regular day job. Itâs not crypto related, we mainly develop desktop software for digital photography and imaging processing, both stand-alone applications as well as Photoshop plug-ins. We started this business in 2005 with four people (currently weâre with five) and we sell our software through our own webshop as well as through distributors and resellers throughout the world.
We mostly sell niche-products, our flagship application is a patented enlargement/interpolation technique which I developed many years ago and improved over time, and we have built several other graphics applications, plug-ins, and filter packages. Our typical customers are photography enthusiasts, graphics editors, web designers, studios and publishers.â
I still urge you to watch the video interview though đ
Rogier also made a pledge to run his Byteball node 24/7 and have it consistently issue new units from his witness address.
A quote from his pledge:
âI have been enthusiastically involved with Byteball almost since its beginning, I strongly believe in its technology, and think compared to other cryptocurrencies it offers a unique solution to the decentralization and consensus problem. Becoming a witness is part of my contribution to make Byteball a success, and hopefully results in more decentralization, increased acceptance, public awareness and recognition, a larger user base, and growing overall usage worldwide.â
You can read the full text here, here, here or here (several copies in case any provider goes out of business).
SHA256 checksum of this PDF is 9ca386373c0c2c2de1bbdebbb25431889dfa6acf19dd59b82f616a6d99f57dd0 (Proof in the Byteball DAG)
Changing the witness list to include Rogier
Like what you see? Then take action now! You can edit your Byteball wallet settings to start using Rogier as a witness.
To do so, open your Byteball wallet, click on the hamburger menu, go to settings and under âTRUSTED NODESâ click on âWitnessesâ
Then flip the switch to disable auto-update from hub and click on the following address:
JEDZYC2HMGDBIDQKG3XSTXUSHMCBK725 (explorer)
Replace it with Rogierâs witness address, which is:
4GDZSXHEFVFMHCUCSHZVXBVF5T2LJHMU (explorer)
And youâre done đ
Progress
A small step for you, a huge step for Byteball. Tony will add Rogierâs address to the default witness list once enough users actively change their witness list to include Rogierâs address and community feedback is mostly positive. Hopefully sooner rather than later. He does operate all other witnesses still, so he has the power to do that. Then we will have finished step 1 in the decentralization process of Byteball.
Iâm not waiting till that day though, Iâm opening a bottle of champagne today. I am very happy this is now finally happening and Iâm sure a lot of you are as well. Cheers!
One swallow doesnât make a summer
Of course weâre not stopping here, we have a few more candidates lined up for you. Weâll introduce them to you over the coming weeks and months. Or, if Rogierâs story inspired you, maybe you want to become a witness yourself, please contact us and weâll talk about it.
Doubts?
Not convinced Rogier is a good candidate? Got the feeling that not enough information was shared and you have more questions before you want to make the switch? Please leave your comments and questions below and we will try to address all of them to the best of our ability.

Introducing Smart Vouchers: A New Way To Earn Referral Rewards By Sending Bytes To New Users
Introducing Smart Vouchers: A New Way To Earn Referral Rewards By Sending Bytes To New Users
Puzzled as to why your social circle doesnât âgetâ distributed ledger technology? Well today we are releasing a new tool to help increase the number of people in your social circle that âgetâ it!
Get paid to send Bytes
You can now earn money for introducing new people to the Byteball network. The money is a reward for your time and effort introducing new users.
Smart Vouchers are like bank deposits that accrue referral rewards
Although many in the distributed ledger world are frustrated with aspects of banking systems, their existence helps explain how our Smart Vouchers work.
Think of a bank account. You deposit some Bytes on the account (Smart Voucher). You put them to work paying for new users attestations, and you earn the referral rewards, which get added back to your Smart Voucher. You can withdraw your money from the Smart Voucher at any time, or you can add more to scale out.
How Smart Vouchers work
You are paid for referring new users to the Byteball network, and new users are also paid for joining. Thatâs the basic premise. At first glance, the graphic below may seem a bit complex. Remember the basic premise though and follow the below steps.
The steps:
1: You as a Sponsor fund a Smart Voucher with at least $8 of Bytes. Letâs say you deposited $40 to the Smart Voucher to be able to fund 5 attestations at the same time.
2: The Smart Voucher code is automatically created, itâs just a sequence of letters and digits that looks like VMJKYJGE3RUMT. You can now share it with whoever you feel like: a friend, colleague, family member, readers of your blog, viewers of your YouTube channelâââyou get the idea.
3: Letâs say you share it with your brother Ben (referred user). He can then use that code instead of paying the $8 fee for a Real Name Attestation (to prove he really is Ben and not a robot trying to game the system). For Ben, the Smart Voucher acts like a discount code, or a coupon, that entitles him to a 100% discount on real name attestation.
4: The Real Name Attestation Bot accepts the Smart Voucher, and withdraws the $8 fee from the Smart Voucher to pay for the attestation.
5: If Benâs attestation is successful, his $20 attestation reward is split in two. $12 is sent to a smart contract on Benâs wallet. He can withdraw that amount 1 year later.
6: The other part of the attestation reward is a $8 reward. This part gets returned to your Voucher to reimburse you for the price of the successful attestation. You also receive a $20 referral reward. This gets sent to the same Smart Voucher and its entire balance ($60 in this example) can now be used to fund new attestation fees.
7: You (the Sponsor) can withdraw the amount you initially deposited directly to your wallet (but not exceeding the Smart Voucher balance). The Smart Voucher balance exceeding what you deposited to it (that is, your net earnings) can be withdrawn to a time locked Smart Contract from which it can be withdrawn after 1 year. The smart contract is automatically created by the bot when it is first withdrawn to.
How much can you expect to earn?
You might be wondering what ROI you can expect as a Sponsor. Letâs assume that only 50% of your referrals successfully complete the attestation and earn you referral rewards. The other 50% just spend the $8 attestation price from your Smart Voucher and earn you nothing (the historical success rate is significantly better at 77% based on the almost 20,000 real name attestations completed so far).
This means that you spend $16 on average per successful attestation, which yields you $8 reimbursement plus $20 referral reward, so $28 in total. Your net profit is therefore $28-$16=$12, which is a 75% ROI on the initially invested $16.
Important things to remember
The Sponsor himself must be verified prior to creating a Smart Voucher.
Restoring a wallet from seed will not bring back access to the contract. So make sure to do a full backup every time a new smart contract is created on your wallet.
Smart Voucher balance is tracked in Bytes, not USD, and is therefore subject to cryptocurrency rate fluctuations. For the best user experience, deposit to the Voucher more than $8 (or more than 8 times the number of attestation attempts you wish to fund).
Byteball rewards new users that join the network. Therefore, referral rewards donât get paid if an attestation is performed from a device that was previously used to attest another person, as this isnât considered a new Byteball user. A referral is getting a second person to install the Byteball wallet on his own device (smartphone or computer) and doing an attestation from that device/wallet, using the Smart Voucher received from the first person.
We know the above might look rather confusing, but the best way to see how it works is to try it!
Sponsor protection
By default a Smart Voucher can be used by the same user at most twice to try to attest their identity. The sponsor can change the maximum number of attempts if they wish (type âhelpâ in chat to see all the available commands that manage your vouchers). Attestation attempts are tracked by the userâs device address, and the limit is in place to protect the voucher from being drained by repeated failed attestation attempts by the same user. If you are unfamiliar with Byteball identity attestations you can read about them here.
A network with a large subset of verified users
This new distribution method allows us to grow the network much faster than before by leveraging existing social and business links. The average person (at least in the USA) is conservatively estimated to know to some extent several hundred people, so the potential network effect of this distribution is greater than previous ones. Further, we are encouraging users to use real names to help build a network with a large subset of verified users.
Private transactions certainly have their place, but in the real world the vast majority of transactions are not conducted in private. In most real world transactions, the sellerâs identity, or both the sellerâs and the buyerâs identity are known to each other.
Real world identities help build trust, and when they are brought online through real name attestation, they become much easier to use. In case an ICO wants you to verify your real world identity before buying their token, they can do it, easily. Nous platform ICO is already doing it. Should a gambling service want to restrict the age of its users to stay compliant, they can do it, and you donât have to disclose all the details of your ID when only age is required. You want to know the identity of those who use BIoT and streaming payments to rent your car or apartment, just in case? You can do it.
We encourage application developers to find use cases and build apps that leverage the secure online identity, a Grants program is in place to help fund the development.
